UgottaBkin-- Thanks for the heads up. We weren't able to make it over to the UHV event on account of the late notice, but I will see what we can do as far as a follow up goes
ImRich-- Was this downtown area you wrote about a hub of the Hispanic communty or something?
Not only do I refer to President Barack Obama as black, but I also refer to Ursula Burns as being black too.
This should not make a difference, though.
I merely changed up my descriptions of these individuals so as to not be so monotonous.
As a woman of color, I interchangeably use the words black and African-American.
I was born and raised in Houston.
My family has roots in Texas and Louisiana stretching as far back as I have been able to determine from my own research.
Despite this strong grounding in American history, I obviously have some African roots.
Therefore, I don’t find it offensive to be referred to as black or African-American or to refer to others with the same terminology.
I do not consider President Obama to be an African-American but not myself just because one of his parent’s was born in Africa and my parents were born in Dallas.
Oh, and in regards to your concern over whether Jamaican-Americans feel some kind of way about being referred to as African-American, I can attest that the ones I know don’t mind, as we are all products of the African diaspora.
I can assure you there was no hidden agenda behind my transposition of these words.
For privacy reasons, I will not put Mr. Litchfield's contact information on the website. However, if you or someone you know would like to donate something to him, please feel free to contact me at 361-580-6521 or gplatenburg@vicad.com. I would be happy to pass along his number or yours. Thanks.
FamilyMan: People of all Spanish levels are welcome, but if you do not know any Spanish at all, you may want to check with the group's organizers. There is a phone number provided in the breakout box.
VaKemp: They met yesterday so the next meeting will be on the 14th.
This is Gheni Platenburg. As a matter of fact, I do like this story, however, that is not why it ran twice. I do have some answers to your questions though, courtesy of Judge Whitaker. His answers are as follows:
Q. Is he going to teach these classes on his own time or do we also pay him while he does that?
A. As an elected official I don't have "vacations days”. In fact, I didn't take a vacation this year, but I will treat my instruction dates as "vacation days" this year and next
Q. Does he receive some other compensation?
A. Instructing for the Texas Justice Court Training Center is uncompensated. The training center books hotel rooms for the instructors and picks up that bill. Instructors pay for their own transportation and meals in advance. Actual transportation costs (or mileage reimbursement) and actual meals costs (less tips and alcohol) are reimbursed by the training center by submitting reimbursement claim forms.
UgottaBkidin, I hope this answers your questions. Thanks for reading.
FYI ...just wanted to clarify that we have spoken with Mr. Hamilton and no correction was needed. Africanized bees that mate with European Bees DO create a hybrid bee that is GENTLER in nature than a 100 percent Africanized Bee.
However, as stated by Mr. Hamilton in the story, the MORE Africanized Bee DNA that this hybrid bee has in its bloodline, the MORE aggressive and dangerous it will be.
Hi y'all. Thanks for the ideas.
