IThe more I read this story the more disgusted and enraged I became. From the get go, it is apparent this man knew what he was doing was illegal. This man is a criminal. End of story. He should be charged as such and deported. $69,000 earned by this illegal who admitted he didn't pay taxes on cash transactions, so now he is breaking tax laws. His common law wife is American and there is no mention of her income or job status. I assume she is on WIC and other government assistance to afford to have 4 kids running around. If not tell me I am wrong. Born here of an illegal immigrant, just minutes after arriving in this country and draining our healthcare resources. Our rules for obtaining citizenship also need to change. If born here, of an illegal immigrant, no automatic citizenship should be granted. Once born, all should be deported and shipped back to the country of origin. As it turns out, this man's cousin smuggles prescription drugs from Honduras into the country. So now we have an illegal immigrant who has broken immigration laws, forged government documents, avoided taxes, and buys illegal drugs from a known dealer. Sounds like just the kind of model citizen we need in this country and a great role model for his kids.
Don't overlook the role that credit card reform has played. People that were living paycheck to paycheck making their minimum payments suddenly had their minimums increased to levels that were no longer manageable, all because the credit card companies wanted balances paid off in three years. Look at some of the players in the mortgage problems, Citi, Capital One, Chase, all big credit card issuers and mortgage and home equity lenders.
any news on game 2?
Nothing has changed in 10 years. 10 years ago, I witnessed a lady who appeared to be in her late 40s early 50s driving drunk, and called police from the road. I followed her til she stopped at a corner store, where proceeded to : fall out of her truck when she opened the door, while walking to the door of the store, she leaned on the wall of the store from the corner of the building to the door needing the support of the wall to stay upright. When she got to the door she reached for the handle, missed the door handle and stumbled backwards off the sidewalk and sat on a hood of a car, otherwise she would have landed on her back side. She finally opened the door, went into the store, came out, stumbled to the pay phone, and then picked up the phone and proceeded to fall backwards similar to a tree that has been chopped, legs straight, knees locked. Her saving grace from smashing the back of her head on the parking lot was the fact she was holding onto the phone's handset with both hands. This kept her from falling. She then proceeded to stand up straight, make a phone call, stumble back to her truck get in and continue driving. Police had not shown up in this time which was easily 10 - 15 minutes. When police did show up and stopped her, she stopped her vehicle in the center turn lane, opened her door and got out of truck and stumbled toward the police officer. Police walked her across the road to a parking lot, wrecker came and took her truck. I recited the story as above to a VPD arresting officer. 2 other adults in my vehicle and they were not asked to give statements, despite their offer to the police to do so.
A week later, I was called by a detective to tell my story again. Detective told me the arresting officer(s) failed to administer a breathalyzer, and then failed to get a blood sample.
Was told I would probably have to testify in court.
Never heard another thing from anybody.
Let's see the county just lost a $1,000,000 federal grant for not enough people flying out of Victoria Regional Airport.
First of all, I would like to see demonstrated evidence of the need and demand for this service.
Then I would think it would be reasonable for the county to invest the $300,000 if it resulted in getting the $1,000,000 grant back.
If my math is correct that would amount to a net gain of $700,000 for the county.
It would cost the county alot more than $300,000 for any improvements needed at the airport due to the lost fed funds.
Furthermore, with an events center planned for the current senior campus, I would hope that future plans would include a high school to accomodate a 3A enrollment. Especially since game day facilities would not be needed.
STG, Times do change, unfortunately many here cannot accept that fact.
As far as the question and comments about Victoria needing 3 high schools; When consolidation occured, 3 high schools were probably needed at that time, rather than consolidating. Problem then was you had a Board and Administration that lacked the balls to enforce the district zones as they were drawn up or would have needed to be drawn up to accomodate a third high school.
I'm sure many parents would have lied about where they lived so their kids could've attended the "new" school rather than either of the old schools. We all know this went at that time so parents wouldn't have to send their kids to SHS. This was especially the case in football.
At least the new plan solves that problem.
Also, many people at that time were of the mindset that being part of a non-5A high school meant you were a lower class citizen.
This is why appeals were constantly made to the UIL to keep Stroman a 5A school even though it did not meet the minimum enrollment.
If currernt enrollment numbers and projections are correct, the student population in VISD does not warrant a 3rd high school at this time. From what I can tell, it looks more like Victoria will have 2 4A schools once the new schools open.
Personally, I would love to see this happen. This would keep teams from traveling too far for all district UIL competitions. Heck, think of the money saved by the district when all teams can travel to district competitions using "Yellow Dogs" instead of charters.
Probably enough money to hire more qualified teachers.
This isn't about the past and the past high schools. This is about 2 brand new high schools.
Victoria High was not the original high school in town.
I'm amazed at the selective history being "taught" concerning this subject, especially when it fits some people's arguments.
Patti Welder was once a high school and I beleive, so was FW Gross.
Grow up. Most of those arguing about the names are adults who should be acting more "grown up."
For those of you who complain that one school should have "Victoria" in it's name to honor the city, take a look. Both Victoria East and Victoria West have the city's name in them.
In my opinion, these school names are about as original as Victoria High was back when it was named in the 50's.
The board has erred in not honoring a past citizen who has made a difference but certainly has not erred by not going back to VHS and SHS.
Victoria is the least bike and hike friendly town I have ever lived in or visited. Many cities and towns have embraced their riverfront by building hike and bike paths along them and then constructing a network of trails to link the city to the riverfront. They also link commercial or downtown areas to the pathways. Those that have done it right have seen a number of businesses spring up along the paths or near the pathways. The paths also cut down on the number of motorists on the roadways.
This city needs leash laws and laws that will force pet owners to provide adequate fencing. I have a neighbor whose dog has busted through fences and attacked other dogs and the police did nothing. Told him to secure his fence better. That was the extent of it. To get something done to fix the situation, someone would have to take the time and expense of suing. We used to have pitbulls running around that would chase people into their homes and unless witnessed by animal control we could do nothing. Thankfully, these idiots moved out of the neighborhood.
