No matter how hot it is, and we all know it has been Hot, whenever I walk outside I think how grateful I am that it's warm. I will not complain about the heat. I complain about the cold. I love the coziness and comfort of hearty winter stews and traditional holiday meals shared with family, but I don't like getting hit with cold air when I walk outside. I don't like having to keep up with a lot of extra clothing: jackets, scarves, gloves, umbrellas--I'm not good at it. Invariably I end up leaving my jacket at work when I need it at home, or vice versa. I much prefer shorts, t-shirts and sandals. So much simpler.

I stopped using iodized table salt many years ago. It tastes bitter and harsh to me now. Almost exclusively, I use Kosher salt. However, I recently bought a pound of gray sea salt from a gourmet spice company and I love it. The salt has a much softer flavor and it's fantastic on salads, especially sliced tomato salad. I just drizzle on a bit of extra virgin olive oil, sprinkle with lemon zest and then dust with fresh ground black pepper and the sea salt--it's a fabulous summer treat! The sea salt grains are much larger than even Kosher salt grains, so it's better to use a finishing salt, rather than using it to season food as you're cooking it.
My next gourmet spice purchase will be smoked sea salt. I can't wait to try it on some grilled fish.
Oh how I love a great dog story! That is one of the best I've ever heard. Hooray for Bella and her family and many prayers for Mr. New for a speedy recovery. Bless his heart.
Yes! I found out as soon as I could. And I did not keep it a secret. Nor I did keep his name a secret. I'm thrilled that we can find out the sex of our babies before they're born... yes, it makes planning a whole lot easier! If I ever have it to do over again, I'd do the same thing.
A word of caution, though! I realize ultrasound technology has improved even in the 10 years since I had my baby, but a friend of mine who was pregnant at the same time I was found out she was having a girl. She had a shower and got girl clothes, picked out a girl name, girl, girl, girl. And when she had the baby? Nope! A boy!!! She spent a good deal of time returning girl clothes.
So grateful for the cooler North wind. My sinuses are most grateful.
I don't feel elation.
On the one hand, I feel caution. We may have killed one man, but we have not killed the zealotry that fueled his attack. His death does not guarantee that such a thing will never happen again.
On the other hand, I am very proud of our military for their bravery and perseverance and grateful for the many sacrifices made over the past 10 years by those who have served and their families.
Thank you, Sonny! Hope to see you there.
These are great suggestions! It looks like Mumphord's is the front runner for great South Texas barbecue. I'll definitely have to try there sometime, I hear the barbecue chicken is to die for.
Mexican food seems to be the runner up here and for the most part, it sounds like most people like La Hacienda. I must admit the food there is great. I also like Las Palmas, the jalapeno poppers there are perfect. My favorite Mexican food restaurant here is Siesta. I'm a huge fan of the salsa and chips.
Southern homestyle? My boyfriend claims that Hungry Jack's has the best chicken fried steak.
What about seafood? Where do we go to get great seafood? I like the fried shrimp at Baytown. I also love the grilled salmon at Greek Brothers.
Keep the suggestions coming!
