The Dept. of Justice proves that sex offenders are one of the two lowest re-offender rates in the country -- the only other is accidental murder. Kevin, get your facts straight and stop listening to the media. I used to think EXACTLY that way but no more. I've learned exactly what is going on. The states make $$ from every sex offender they convict - whether they are guilty of a heinous crime or a simple misdemeanor type of crime like online chat or kissing their "bit too young" girlfriend when in fact they are older teens or in the young 20's. 3.5% is the re-offense rate - so that other 96.5% NEVER re-offend. Mr. Habern is right, keep the violent scary offenders in jail and leave the rest to live out their lives - they didn't deserve such punishment. (and no I'm not a sex offender)
Do the research, learn the facts - they're going to surprise you just like they surprised me. I no longer "fear" the dreaded "sex offender" because I've met too many that are the nicest people I've ever met who made ONE mistake and are paying dearly for it. Go Mr. Habern, continue to sue sue sue because what they are doing is unconstitutional and if they do place residency restrictions, yep, sue again because it's been proven ineffective, more dangerous for everyone and counterproductive in more than one state. (and lawsuits have been won because of residency restrictions)
I voted no as well because there are too many on the registry that should not be on it in the first place. Only violent offenders of ANY kind should be on a police-viewed registry. If someone is that dangerous as to pose a threat to anyone, they should not be out anyway. The registry is just for the $$$, it has proven nothing but ignorance by our legislators. There are too many facts about the entire mess and they aren't reading them.
Thank goodness some sense here. Thank you. I always ALWAYS thought that only pedophiles and violent people were on the registry. I've since learned the truth and so many are NOT violent nor ever hurt anyone. What IS the point in the registry if it has proven to be not working and puts on there fellas who had sex with their girlfriends consensually or chatted consensually, stuff that doesn't mount up to a hill of beans in ANY day and age -- I, myself, would have put at least 8 fellas on the registry when I was a teenager...my friends would have as well. It isn't working - why not just have a VIOLENT offender registry and if they are SO violent that they WOULD DEFINITELY hurt someone, do NOT let them out of jail, period! We wouldn't need a registry at all then eh?
All men are in danger of being on the registry in Texas for the dumbest stuff now - and most are just stupid things like tinkling out your back door (yes, I know of a guy that happened to, he's on the registry -- his OWN HOME), tinkling on the side of the road, the chat thing has to stop - that's just insane -- that's a THOUGHT crime when they just chat about sex and do NOTHING...we've gone way overboard because our legislators are old and don't use the internet much. If they did they'd get an eyeful and FAST on what teens are doing (and young people age 25 and under) online on a REGULAR basis.
Hope they change this mess - it's sad to see lives all over ruined for such misdemeanor or NO criminal behavior.
