"I have been working for Formosa Plastics for almost 18 years now. Half of the time I was with Instrument Maintenance, now with Utilites Operations. I work in the cogeneration area. We make electricty and handle the water and steam production for use in the plant. "

"Rebecca, Is there a general site or sites where you can look up instructional things, not just for those teaching in home school but for us older ones who would like to educate ourselves further."

"I don't see what the problem was with the old standardized test many years ago. It gave a general idea of what and how the school was doing I believe. When the boys were in school, when the time for the tests came around all the school did was try to teach that test. Education is so much more. The oldest had to take the TASK orally because of his reading problem. Finally past the last one his last semester. If you cannot read the words on the math test, well doesn't mean you don't know the math. Anyway. As a plug to you homeschoolers... In our historical reenactments and living history's we have school days and other functions. Many times we do some checking ourselves on where the school kids come from, public schools, private schools, home school programs, etc. Many, many times the home schoolers are the most knowing in our history. When we start talking about events, people, living situations, etc. they seem to be up and able to carry on conversations about the topics. And are mainly up on manners. Personally witnessed in TX, MS, TENN and AL. I know you have a tighter grip of control of classroom and such but it is just an observation if someone is making a decision. I believe alot of things have to do with it in all schools like the teachers, administraion, neighborhood, etc. I miss the boys being young and watching them grow up and I do not miss having to mess with the schools and testing things."

"I put this on the wrong wall - mine. So now I'll put it on yours, and try to figure out how to delete the other. Sorry I missed you. How could that happen? My wife always gets blistered because I'm so easily distracted. I must have been deep in thought about something. I don't know how to "favorite" a post, but I dearly appreciate your kind words about the blog. "

"Okay...the snake in the picture has been identified as a cottonmouth, a chicken snake, and a diamond back water snake. Until I get positive ID on the critter, to me it's a SNAKE!!!!! Break out the flame throwers and shotguns. Snakes are one thing I hate more than pirates and terrorists. "

"It's spring! It's been a mild and dry winter. Snakes are going to be out looking for water and food. Be aware and watch your children! And watch out for your pets too! Water Moccasin's are known to be very aggressive, so keep a distance if you see one. Normally they are darker than the snake shown here.... If you don't know if a snake is venemonous or not, remember to check out the shape of it's head... if it's triangular, I recommend moving very quickly into the opposite direction! "

"That may be enough for you, hoss, but there are way to many small children that frequent that area. As I recall, the Police Department killed an alligator in the duck pond a few years ago as well."

"Rebecca - What you saw was a diamond-backed water snake. These are very common near the river. We used to find them at the zoo often when I worked there. They are completely harmless. See this site for more pictures to verify... http://www.texassnakes.net/DiamondBacked.htm"

"Rebecca The snake in the picture is a cottonmouth water moccasin. A closeup reveals the triangle head of a pit viper and most recognizable stump tail. This snake is one of the four native poisonous snakes found in our country. I advise you and your family give this reptile lots of space."

"The snake that you saw at the duck pond is a chicken snake. More than likely they/it was trying to get the ducks eggs...they like eggs. They look very similar to a rattle snake so make sure to never never mistake one. "

Bio

"Birds fly, fish swim, man thinks and learns. Therefore, we do not need to motivate children into learning by wheedling, bribing or bullying. We do not need to keep picking away at their minds to make sure they are learning. What we need to do, and all we need to do, is bring as much of the world as we can into [their lives]; give children as much help and guidance as they ask for; listen respectfully when they feel like talking; and then get out of the way. We can trust them to do the rest."  John Holt   How Children Learn
