"i was just curious. i find it interesting that someone who was going to be a part of the system chose to remove their child from the system. i was wondering if it was a philosophical difference or what. if you think they're mastering the information, then that's all really matters, right? do you do daily reviews or weekly reviews or anything like that? do you try to measure their mastery? what do homeschoolers who don't give grades do when the kids apply to college? i'm trying to be a pain or anything, i have a 16 month old and we have been discussing our educational options. "I'll post this here since the page was removed: Yes, I think I understand what you are articulating and the wave of polarization in the country is certainly palpable but I feel it's a cyclical force. I think it will wane when it comes to 2012 and sobering moderation rears its head again. That's not to belittle the genuine concerns of people from all angles of the ideological spectrum but the last 2 years have been very hard on many Americans (not to mention the rest of the world) and the fear, doubt and anger that has been fermenting over this time serve only to divide, regardless of the genuine reasons to feel this way. In the later half of the 20th Century America climbed to the top of the tree and became a global superpower. With every step it took from the end of WW2 until today, the risk of falling from the perch is ever present in the mindset of Americans. From the Cold War to Islamic Jihad the burden of being the best of the best is a strain that creates a mass culture of fatalism that feeds into the psyche of our society. This larger than life black & white view of the world is what we tap into when we start to perceive cracks... Perhaps the country needs to see a therapist? BTW this has absolutely nothing to do with odd men carrying placards though...or does it?"

"I don't see what the problem was with the old standardized test many years ago. It gave a general idea of what and how the school was doing I believe. When the boys were in school, when the time for the tests came around all the school did was try to teach that test. Education is so much more. The oldest had to take the TASK orally because of his reading problem. Finally past the last one his last semester. If you cannot read the words on the math test, well doesn't mean you don't know the math. Anyway. As a plug to you homeschoolers... In our historical reenactments and living history's we have school days and other functions. Many times we do some checking ourselves on where the school kids come from, public schools, private schools, home school programs, etc. Many, many times the home schoolers are the most knowing in our history. When we start talking about events, people, living situations, etc. they seem to be up and able to carry on conversations about the topics. And are mainly up on manners. Personally witnessed in TX, MS, TENN and AL. I know you have a tighter grip of control of classroom and such but it is just an observation if someone is making a decision. I believe alot of things have to do with it in all schools like the teachers, administraion, neighborhood, etc. I miss the boys being young and watching them grow up and I do not miss having to mess with the schools and testing things."

"It's spring! It's been a mild and dry winter. Snakes are going to be out looking for water and food. Be aware and watch your children! And watch out for your pets too! Water Moccasin's are known to be very aggressive, so keep a distance if you see one. Normally they are darker than the snake shown here.... If you don't know if a snake is venemonous or not, remember to check out the shape of it's head... if it's triangular, I recommend moving very quickly into the opposite direction! "

Bio

"Birds fly, fish swim, man thinks and learns. Therefore, we do not need to motivate children into learning by wheedling, bribing or bullying. We do not need to keep picking away at their minds to make sure they are learning. What we need to do, and all we need to do, is bring as much of the world as we can into [their lives]; give children as much help and guidance as they ask for; listen respectfully when they feel like talking; and then get out of the way. We can trust them to do the rest."  John Holt   How Children Learn
