Things have simmered down after Zimmerman's arrest and that is exactly why he was arrested...to calm things down. There is nothing new here. To avoid the heat Zimmerman was charged, thereby shifting the onus onto the backs of a judge and jury. The legal system was protecting itself in doing so, much the manner in which grand juries are used, and in essence sacrificed Zimmerman. How does it go..."the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few". Zimmerman wasn't arrested and charged right away because there was not sufficient probable cause to do so. He was injured during an assault on his person, and had allegedly fired in self-defense, under cover of a law on the books that allowed him to do just that. The fact that Martin was unarmed matters little if Martin indeed was winning the physical confrontation and Zimmerman believed shooting him was the only way he could survive. As I recall, a witness corroborated his accounting of the incident and saw Martin on top of Zimmerman just prior to being shot. Everything changed when it became a political issue. The President spoke, Al Sharpton spoke, the New Black Panther Party demanded blood and a weak prosecutor acquiesced and appeased the angry. Now the real issue will be what is going to happen if Zimmerman is found not guilty. *IMHO based on information that has been released by the media*.

If Zimmerman felt he could not defend himself any other way than by using his handgun, then it was legal for him to do so. Being clobbered upside the head unexpectedly can have the effect of giving a distinct advantage in a fight to the person throwing the punch, be he big or small. It is being reported that Martin followed that punch up by slamming Zimmerman's head against the ground, all this before being shot by Zimmerman who fired from the ground? Sounds like self-defense to me, IF the information we are receiving is accurate.

@JD...I believe the website you are referring to is DogsBite.org rather than DogBite.org. Here is another one that that most should find interesting:

@heidijanthony - "the media doesn't report it to us when its another breed of dog...those attacks do happen.. and serious injuries and deaths occur"

For almost (40) years I worked in a position where I was aware of most if not all serious dog bite/attack incidences. There frequently are bites that occur that require a tetanus shot and maybe a few stitches at the ER, but sitting here and searching my memory, I can't recall a serious incident that did not involve a pit bull.

I will agree that the way a dog is treated by its owner will have a great bearing on its behavior but this just seems to be a bold breed of dog with a short fuse and one that is not bashful or hesitant, to not just nip or bite and release, but to stay on its victim and continue an attack and cause a great deal of tissue damage or death. I know several hunters who use them to hunt hogs due to their brash temperment and lack of fear.

The point, as made by others, is just this....why is it always pit bulls? When was the last time you read about a boston terrier, dachshund, beagle, basset hound, collie, irish setter, labrador retriever or golden retriever killing a child or attacking a person.

Pit bulls may be fine animals but they seem top have an inherent trait which at times predisposes them to react violently without provocation.

If this is going to happen, I would much rather see them at a location away from Victoria College. It would seem that they are landlocked. Kind of a shame having to place the student housing across Ben Wilson from the campus. Hopefully they plan to pay for any services that Victoria College already has in place and that they want to share in, otherwise the taxpayer will be asked to ante up even more.

@ DaleZuck - "And then get the State out of micro-managing education of OUR children". I could not agree with you more. Many of the people with TEA today, have never even taught!

@EdithAnn - "One big difference, like it or not, is that private schools are not teaching the latest test from Austin all year. They are actually teaching the subject matter." This is one of the biggest issues. School districts are required to spend so much time on preparation for these tests that they cannot provide a well rounded education. Ask nearly any instructor at Victoria College and they will likely confirm that students from St. Joe are generally better prepared for college than students from VISD.

There has been mention about basing funding on graduation rates. That will only work if the kids that don't care about learning are left out of the equation. Any plan that places more onus on the teacher in the classroom will fail. They have too much on their plate now, and as the old saying goes...you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink". There has been mention of tying teachers pay to how successful their students are. That is another idea that is doomed. One year a teacher may have a great class, with involved and caring parents and the next year they get a terrible class with uncooperative students and parents which slows the progress of the entire class.

    Restricting hearing???

Why not garnish the wages of everyone on the executive level that took part in this debacle, until the $350,000 is repaid.

I would be willing to wager that there will be many more issues with ObamaCare as the full understanding of it is learned. What else can be expected of a law that was passed without the people responsible for it, even knowing what was in it. Interesting the way it got changed so easily to make contraceptives "free" for those with religious issues. Everyone knows nothing is free. Someone, somewhere, namely me and you, are going to end up paying for it one way or another.
