Victoria East game expected to start at 7:45. Our stringer down in Corpus, John Allen, gave me an update a few minutes ago.

Hopefully it'll be smooth sailing once they get started.

    APAWPA,

Football games should only be called because of lightening or if a visiting team cannot make the trip because of the weather - as far as we know.

There's no news of game times changing right now, and our weather reporter, David Tewes, said the he thinks the worst of the weather should be what's happening this afternoon.

In short, we're expecting the normal slate of football games tonight.

Also, we will be running a correction and a correct story in Sunday's paper.

An updated, and correct, version of this story is now online. The Advocate sports department does not believe stories like this should be printed, and we're correcting our procedures to make sure it never happens again.

I would like to personally apologize to fans, players and anyone else who was offended by this story. We all take this very seriously, and we never want an error like this to make it to print.

I'll be contacting the team and school, as well, to apologize and let them know we respect the team and the community as much as any other we cover.

While this apology can't erase what's happened, I hope the steps we're taking to correct the story and the process, as well as our future coverage, can help mend some of the damage that's occurred.

For anyone still paying attention, the Advocate will be running the results from the staff and reader voting on Top 10 players in NBA history.

It will appear in Sunday's paper on page C5 and also online. Thanks to all who voted, either by post or e-mail.

I want to address a few of the concerns voiced on this story, in which it seems readers believe there was some intended negativity. I apologize if anything in this story was read out of context, it certainly wasn't our intention to show a problem with chemistry among Refugio's players. We believe this is a very strong team, and as Crossroads residents, we are proud of their accomplishment to go this far in the playoffs.

    1. The Advocate sports section writes feature stories on players within a team. The goal is to tell stories about people, and we've found that the majority of our readers agree with this method. We'd like to do stories on as many players as we can, but we can't include an entire team in one feature story.

    2. This particular story was not intended to create a false sense of animosity within Refugio's team. It was intended to be a story about how the catcher, Kristen Wise, catches two different style pitchers, and sharing that time at practice.

It was not the writer's intent to make the two pitchers seem selfish, it was intended to be light-hearted, as this sentence shows: "They sometimes get jealous of each other," Wise said of the two pitchers with a giggle. "Sometimes, one of them wants me, and then the other one wants me, but it's fun working with them."

He specifically inserted the "giggle" part to show how Wise was joking around about the two pitchers.

    3. Readers will always interpret things differently, but no one who read the story in the newsroom thought the story had implied legitimate fighting among Refugio's players.

We understand that things can be interpreted differently, but we want players, parents, fans and readers to know that it was not the intention.

We stand behind John Hornberg's reporting completely. It is never his intention to create a problem with team chemistry, and he cares very much about the teams he covers. He is very careful about making sure his quotes are correct and in context. We believe John is doing his job as he should be.

We wish the best of luck to Refugio and Hallettsville in this week's softball playoff. We want to see both teams do well.

It's a good argument. Duncan and Kobe are both close, and I might be wrong about Shaq. It could be my memory of the way Shaq dominated in his prime. I don't have the same memories of Duncan.

I could be wrong, and a good argument could sway me.

An error was corrected in this story. It originally said McCarthy was the head coach at Bloomington from 2004-09. He was actually the head coach from 1992-99.
