"Polyester bell-bottoms, extension forks on the 20" banana-seat bike with no fear of riding through town (I'm from New Braunfels), Christmas was still Christmas, Easter was when the mountain laurels started to bloom and filled the air with that incredible aroma, Dad's '69 Camaro SS convertible (He was the Chevy dealer, but that was my favorite!) The "New Car Showing" in September, the smell of deer jerky coming straight out of the smokehouse, the trips to Big Bend without fear of being kidnapped or murdered... Mom passed away a year ago, Dad just a month ago. They took a lot of memories with them, but Mom was a hoarder and left me the entire collection of Time/Life magazines. The one that comes to mind is the space shuttle blowing up, but they're all there. Cheeseburgers were 25 cents, gas was around the same for a gallon. No talk of Iran or Iraq but Russia seemed scary. Then the invasion of the Japanese, not Pearl Harbor but the automobile and electronics industry. I guess that was in the 70's, though. Man, we are old, aren't we? I wonder what these kids will remember when they're 50. It won't be the horny toad, that's for sure."
