I am the education reporter for the Victoria Advocate. My main foucuses are Victoria ISD, Victoria College, and University of Houston- Victoria, but I'm open to school stories throughout the Crossroads.
I was hired at the Victoria Advocate in January 2009, and began as a sports reporter. A month later, I became a ranging reporter until August 2009, when I took on education.
I also cover diversity stories of any kind, whether it's minorities, special interest groups, senior citizens, children, the mentally and physically challenged.
Being a reporter is a great experience. You learn something everyday just from interacting with people. From every house fire, living condition or circumstance of people I have talked to, I learn to not take life for granted. Beinga reporter has changed my life for the better.
If you have any story ideas dealing with education, diversity, or just want to talk, give me a call in the newsroom at 361-580-6535 or e-mail me at jcavazos@vicad.com.
