in response to this article, i have to say that i started to play basketball at the age of 6. my parents put me in the YMCA program and i got to play with boys and girls half court. i must say that was the smartest thing my parents did because that put me in a spot when it came to me playing in junior high or high school. when i went to college and played, almost all of my team mates played since they were about 6 or 7. i have a theory that it helped me gain a different level of knowledge of the sport than others that started out later. I know that when i have my children, i will make that judgement on what to put them in. in fact, i will def. put them in the YMCA programs because i believe they helped me. right now, im teaching my neices how to play and they go by the ages of 3, 5, 9. so im anxious who will play any sport and where they will go in life. now a days its easier for a girl to go play basketball in college. A great coach told me that " if you really want to play ball in college, there is always a college out there that wants you...." so my theory is that its best to start them out young but dont pressure them to do something they do not want to do. some parents can not gain the understanding the difference of what the parent wants vs the child.
