I believe that a public funded hospital which is provided by taxation of the populace to develop and implement such a policy is incredulous. For the administrator of the hospital to implement such a callous policy is in many regards, in my opinion, inaprehensabile and dramatically obtuse. It is my understanding that a hospital is as a primary function an entity that provides help to people and ensures the health and well being of the community it serves.
According to the latest CDC data regarding obesity Texas as a whole has 30 percent of the adults in the state being obese or a BMI of above or equal to 30. Victoria as a county, (2008 Data Age Adjusted Median) is 28.5 percent obese. Obese being defined as greater than or equal to a 30 BMI. Data Source: http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/DDT_STRS2/Co...
By implementing such a policy the hospital has excluded 30 percent of the county workforce from consideration.
As far as the comment regarding abilty to function and BMI. An average college or NFL lineman will have a BMI of 34.2 but operates at a muscular and cardiovacular level much higher in efficiency than a typical adult. Would he be excluded and would he be able to lift patients and equipment.
Therefore the administrator of the hospital has decided to exclude and discriminate against people based on BMI. I feel that is ridiculous. Administer a physical agility test to new applicants like the Police and Fire departments conduct to see if their employees can do the job. The hospital won't get rid of current employees that are overweight because the administrators know that they would be sued for wrongful termination and lose the case. The Texas EEOC and federal courts have already moved forward suing employers for wrongful termination of employees due to weight. The EEOC has determined that abilty to do the job is the measurement standard and not any other factors.
Shame on you David Brown and Shame on the Victoria Count for allowing this to happen. David Brown needs to go, on that I agree.
Edith he is the COUNTY fire marshal, these guys are CITY fire marshals, its like the city has a police chief and the county has a sheriff
Hey Park Pork,
I guess you have not been reading the paper because the Victoria County Fire Marshall and Commissioners Court already banned aerial fireworks earlier this month. Read the paper from the 6th of June. Also burn bans have nothing to do with fireworks they are separate and have to be passed separately. We support the hard work of the Commissioners and the Fire Marshall are doing to keep us safer, Viva Victoria County
P.S. I think Jackson County banned aerials too before you go yelling at them.

I agree with you about that the timing of burns. People doing burns should not smoke out town. We live in Texas were I have heard people say this is my land by god and I will do what I want on it. You are correct if there is no burn ban, or other laws restricting burning, then ranchers can do what they want. I beleive the last few months we have had many rancher burning, and many times people are inconsiderateabout how they do things, like talking in the movies, or cutting you off in traffic, but you have to remeber if youhave a problem with the rancher burning, find out who is burning, get in your car and go complain to them, complaining to the editor does nothing, it is the rancher that needs an earful, I am so sick of people in the world hiding behind other people and not facing issues. If your neighbor is doing something you dont like, talk to them, dont just call the cops and complain, if he tells you to leave after you tried to be neighborly, then call an authority, but remeber the law only allows limited regulation, people in Texas want thier rights from laws. If you cant handle the way it is then move somewhere else and complain about something else. I would have liked to know your complaints when they were burning in Mexico and the entire area of south Texas was covered in thick smoke, what would you want people to do? Invade Mexico so that we can make em stop so they wont ruin one Sunday in your life, I bet there were lots of Sundays you got to enjoy before and after the burn ruined your one day.
On the burn building, I think the city, county and college should work together to fund a multiple use public safety training facility to train fire police and emergency workers, the college educates them and city and county entities do also, it would make sense to share the costs and if could be utilized by all the entities. Also one last thing, if anyone wants to get rid of our firefighters and return to the good old days of volunteers only, then you be the first to pick up a hose and spend all night sitting at the station waiting for a call, sweating and wishing the pain and exhaustion would go away after six calls because of the lack of rest. I thank god for the fire and police in our community and the volunteer firefighters who give up their time to protect us. They do so selfishly so that we can sleep safetly. Many times we forget the real Heros that are among us everyday.
Also about going to shop at HEB or picking up food. They have to eat in that 24 hour period, so how do you expect them to get food, a delivery service. They have to go in a truck so they can stay together and ready to respond for any emergency. Even if they are at the store they are still ready to respond. Why don't you start a grocery delivery service for fire departments, and that would solve the problem.
Woof woof, you need to educate yourself, I would suggest you put your money where your mouth is and attend the civilian fire academy, or go to the fire chief and ask these questions instead of using the comment page to express your dissatisfaction. It is apparent you don't like firefighters, I pray for you sir that you never need their services. If you did not have firefighters ever ready at the fire station, your taxes would go up because they would have to have more firefighters to work through the night and not sleep. These men and women sometimes do not sleep for a 24 hour shift. Sometimes they do it depends on how busy it is at night. Regardless they are ready to respond to your emergency at a moments notice. Instead of coming up with problems why don't you first educate yourself on their jobs and what they do, then as a taxpayer work to come up with fiscally responsible solutions that ensure citizens have public safety when they call for help. Come up with solutions instead of just attacking something you don't know about.
Woof woof, why is it a problem for firefighters to collect money for MDA, even if they are on the clock. It would not prohibit them from responding to fire and EMS calls. Why are you even bringing that up, does it bother you that they are helping people who have muscular diseases in the community. MDA is supported by hundreds of thousands of firefighters in this nation, and many communities send their firefighters out to raise money for the less fortunate, I am proud that my community leaders see philanthropy and community service as important for city and county employees. If they are paid or not it does not matter, they are helping the community and that is what matters, if you have a problem with it then pickup a boot and sweat in the sun to raise money for someone less fortunate than you. Service before self is an admirable trait. Victoria city and county firefighters we are proud of you.
Kenneth, there is a bunker at the airport, I have never heard that? Where at the airport? Thanks for your help.
Woof Woof
I forgot to ask you something. you ask has anyone heard from them meaning the Emergency Manager and County Fire Marshall, why don't you call them and get you answers instead of getting on this comment area and not knowing what it is they do. I am sure if you pick up the phone and have an intelligent conversation with them instead of making accusations you could get your answers. The County Fire Marshal number is 579-9103 and the emergency manger is 485-3362. Call them and get your answer.
