Reopen the trail and do what your Mom told you - look both ways before crossing the street. Extending a school zone won't solve the problem, not to mentioned that high schools don't have school zones. You know for 50 years kids crossed all over Miori and Sam Houston to get to high school and no one scream foul. I saw the same thing at Stroman - kids crossed where it was easy, they didn't walk all the way down to North St. to use the crosswalk. Where were all of these screaming parents last year? "The city should or the VISD should have planned better" - maybe, but Victorian's have got in a really bad habit of complaining about everything. They could have built a skywalk and sidewalks zigzaging all over the place and someone would say it's not enough.
Welcome Murphy's and let the gas war continue. Thomas and New have had a monoply one decade too long on gas prices around here. It has always bugged me how Speedy Stop is cheaper in Port Lavaca, especially when the gas is being shipped from Victoria which is an extra cost!
Yet another reason to say "good bye" and so long to Dr. Hudson. Who is the contractor anyway? Is it always late Kruger Construction?
Agree with Edith, Boots campaign should not get credit for students heads in beds.
The county doesn't pay the heritage director $50k. I don't think VC is providing the same services as the county. Have you ever tried to research at the VC, good lord, you need a level 5 security clearance to get into that part of the library. I've never had a problem getting information from the county archives.
By the way, why do we need so many people working in the county clerks office? Someone should really take a close look at that office staffing levels. Maybe when Huvar finally leaves, the new guy will take a hard look at what has been going on in that office for the last 50 years.
Familyman, it will cost more for an election than the proposed savings from this effort. You can not put every single item up for vote before the voters. They have public hearings for budgets and other things, which is our opportunity to comment, object, etc. In addition, we have an election this fall, another opportunity for us to shape things for the future. Call your commissioner and tell them how you feel.
If Hudson was such a great administrator, why are the new dorms running behind schedule and classes delayed by two weeks? Perhaps, there are meaningful reasons why UH decided to let him go. I'm not buying the conspiracy theory that he was let go because he supported the downward expansion. He might have been a great cheerleader to some, but he was a poor manager...
Great move by Commissioner's Court. These folks are probably the least affected by this decision.
Why didn't the school district sell the two schools they said they were going to close at the beginning of this $159million project, Mitchell and Juan Linn? The proceeds from the sale of these two facilities would surely fund the access improvement needs for the two high schools. I was told budget was the reason the extra drives were not installed at the east high campus.
West campus was poorly located to begin with and will take some creativity and major dollars to fix. What a waste of our tax $ Mr. Moore!
So the county has money to buy and bulldoze several buildings downtown, which now looks like a third world country by the way. Then build an unnecessary and expensive parking garage at the hospital and suddenly they are out of money and need to eliminate working folks jobs??? Something stinks here! They should cut Dave Brown's salary by enough to keep some of these folks working.
Interesting that folks keep harping on the city manager salary while turning a blind eye to the even higher salary of other public officials in Victoria. For example, the Victoria College president makes more with fewer employees, VISD superintendent makes more, and my favorite, David Brown, Citizen's Hospital Administrator makes a whopping $400,000 a year. All of these positions are public! And don't get me started on how much two VISD head football coaches are probably going to make...
