Brady is absolutely correct. "Arbitrary" is the key word. I'm sorry Mr. Polasek but I will have to vehemently disagree with you. In '07 I purchased my home, and depended on the information the CAD provided us as accurate. Obviously we considered the previous year taxes before our purchase. In '08 the CAD assessed the value 59K more than the previous year. Believe me, we disputed the increase in front of the CAD Board. As the CAD Board sat in front of my wife and I, looking completely dumb founded, they turned their attention to the CAD rep. sitting in the hearing and began a series of questions. Her response was as follows: "I will have to look into this". "I have no idea?" "I really have no explanation at this time". It was down right comical and quite sad.
Obviously the CAD Board in all their dismay agreed to a $16K increase and scolded the CAD for their lack of attention to fair market values in our particular neighborhood. In addition, they apologized for placing the burden of such an increase on the tax payer, and struggled to come up with a reasonable answer as to why there had been no serious assessment in the last 15 years. Later we learned that the owner of our home previous to our purchase was a man of influence in this community and his property had been "over looked" still with no explanation. Unfortunately several of my friends who have recently moved into the community share very similar stories. It's just "the way it's always been". (tired of hearing that btw)

The picture that accompanies this article just might well be a great educational tool for children. Pay close attention boys and girls, this is the beginning of what we call the "legal system", and the cycle of how a ticket becomes a warrant, and why people go to jail.
Police woman writes ticket......said offender hates the po-po. Said offender has no money to pay said ticket. (Said offender also has no money to buy a leash from Pets Mart....and no his weight bench and attached heavy chain in his front yard doesn't count as proper restraint and control) Said offender fails to show up for a place he's very, very familiar with.... It's called "court". Mr. offender's name gets placed on the warrant list. Many months later, Mr. or Mrs. Police Officer attempts to make a traffic stop on said offender's vehicle for an expired inspection sticker and out of date license plates. Said offender decides that running from the police in his 1987 Buik Regal with his rent-a-rims is his best option. Said offender crashes, bails from his car and runs down Navarro. Said offender gets tazed and tazed, and tazed and arrested. It is also discovered that said offender has no insurance to pay for the damage he caused to 4 innocent motorist and the front of the building he rammed his car through. Said offender goes to jail for a very, very, very long time, because Mr. Tyler does not like said offender. Said offender's probation is also revoked, because said offender's probation officer is fed up with his failure to comply with the terms of his probabtion. Said offender is assigned to a jail cell with rival gang members, who do not like said offender's uncle, brother, and homeboy Johnny. The dude that slept with said offender's live in while said offender was in jail the last time is also in the cell. Yes, yes, unfortunately said offender assaults said dude, and Mr. Tyler (who does not care for said offender) adds additional time to what has become an extremely long and expensive sentence that the tax payers are now responsible for.
The moral of the story kids, don't get a Pit Bull! Pit Bulls are bad, bad, bad animals and caused said offender to go to jail for a very long time. Don't go to jail for a very long time, buy a Cocker Spaniel. (In no way is this story reflective of any of the people involved in yesterday's incident. It's merely speculation based on nothing more than an educational guess)
Therefore, we need to localize education. All the way down to the needs and desires of the local tax base. Allow Victorian's to decide the education they wish to provide for the kids in public school. Allow the tax payers to fund 100% of the programs, athletics, extracurriculars. Allow the Victoria voting public to decide what should and should not be taught in the schools. LOCALIZE education. That would be fair.
Let's start with a "vicious dog" ordinace.
Our prayers to the family and the loss of their child. Such a horrible tragedy.
Unfortunately "unsavory characters" cannot be regulated. Just because you may perceived as an "unsavory character" doesn't exactly mean you are a "criminal". News Flash: Not only do "criminals" breed and own these vicious creatures, but so do idiots. There is no law banning idiots from dog ownership.
We can all dance around this issue, and we can try and defend pit bull ownership, but the cold hard truth is that this particular breed is the common denominator in all of these horrible tragedies.
The speculation that another breed of ferocious dog would be bred is simply just that.....merely speculation. We can speculate, but unfortunately all we can do is address the problem at hand based on the facts we are presented.
Fact #1: Pit Bulls mame, maul, and kill human beings. Fact #2: Pit Bulls have been the target of city ordinaces banning this breed because of the vicious attacks upon humans and other animals. Fact #3: Our community has suffered great loss because of this breed and of course irresponsible ownership.
Please save any arguments you may think are valid or logical. They are not. They are falling on deaf ears It's time for this city to take action. I realize this was a terrible, terrible incident that occurred in the county, however the City of Victoria should take the lead and start immediately on legislation to bann these animals. It's long overdue and it's time!
Bravo Visdmom, well stated.
I'm still frantically searching for the articles about the boxers, and schnauzers and possibly the Labs that have maimed and killed........I'm just not having any luck!
Unfortunately you own it, so you fix it. C'mon city!
Noooooooo, say it isn't so! OK, whatever. Who actually flies to Victoria. Geez!
Vic. Advocate this is ridiculous. Why is this news worthy? This is by far the low of the low for the Advocate.
"This is a win-win," UHV President Philip Castille said in the news release. "There will be no diminishment of our program offerings, and our programs will continue to meet the needs of Fort Bend County."
Someone please explain to me how this is a "win-win" for Victoria? I'm confused. This is a spin job being put on this situation by UH-Victoria leaders. This is a significant occurrence for UHV. Personally, I think losing 1/3 of your enrollment is a bad thing.....isn't it? There goes 1/3 of your revenue as well. When will they take the Cinco Ranch-Victoria campus? Is that next? UHV couldn't survive if that happenned. Sounds like the system is giving Victoria leaders everything they asked for and then some........
This reminds me of my Dad telling me "It's time to grow up boy, and face the world!" UHV better increae their enrollment locally.
