The 2011 UIL HS Softball season starts Jan. 21 with practices allowed after school. Area teams will be hitting off tees and getting pitching time in. 2 new schools will be in the area. Victoria East and West will be in 4A. New rule for this upcoming season is a 43 ft. pitching distance. Last year it was 40ft. Only time will tell if this has a big effect on pitching, on hitting or both.
Teams that seem to be ready to show their presence is Edna, Cuero, St. Joe and Port Lavaca. Now Victoria’s East and West have returning players from Memorial’s day of play. If West can hit the ball, do well in class grades and find pitching help they may be a sleeper awakening. If East can utilize their talent, bond with a new coach on board they should compete well in district. Cuero should be a force if the young ladies can develop their skills to go with a good pitching crew. Goliad will have a lot of freshman to prove themselves as a contender. They are not seasonal players so this team will be solid in 2-3 years if they stay at it. Palacios as well has girls who play a lot of softball. The team should be competitive if they push themselves. Victoria St. Joe could make some noise as well. The talent is there they just need to play as a team and be aggressive. Edna has a young strong team with experienced players. Be prepared to face a tough team in a couple years.
The injury bug has affected Cuero, East, West, Faith Academy, Edna and Calhoun. If those injuries are short lived these teams should be exciting to watch. Most teams have been playing in tourneys already to prepare for the new season.
VISD is having a tournament. I hope the local teams and ranked teams start to make this event a first choice. Attendance needs to be there so teams want to come here. No worry for the media. They cover the sport pretty darn good.
I think these are the preseason area’s best softball teams. Update 3 weeks into the season. .
