Image My Dad has been to the moon and back three times. And it's very cold in space. At least that's what he told the hospice volunteer who came to visit last Friday. Once I picked my jaw off the floor I managed to give the volunteer an apologetic smile. All day Daddy had been fairly sharp. In fact, lately he seems sharper than he was when he first came to live with us. And then he has to go and say that stuff about flying to the moon...gotta' love it.

Dad and I have discovered Saxet Lakes Park. We were on the hunt for the elusive trains that run through this town. Evidently,(as far as we can tell) there's no set schedule for them. Funny thing is, before we got really serious about watching the trains, we would hear their horns off in the distance at all hours of the day and night. So, while "tracking" the train (pardon the pun) I saw the sign for the park and I turned off the main road. Daddy read the sign at the entrance, "Saxet Lakes Park". We explored the park by car and we liked what we saw; the water, the nice trees, the picnic tables and barbecue pits, the well kept grounds. We drove slowly through the park with Linda Ronstadt singing on the stereo and the windows rolled down. We vowed we'd come back soon and have a picnic.

Today Dad slept late. I never know how much sleep he gets each night because some nights he gets up and rearranges things in his room. He's restless and then sometimes he gets agitated because he thinks he has to go to work. I let him sleep. When he finally woke up around 12:30 p.m. I brought him coffee and some fresh fruit for breakfast. He got dressed and we drank more coffee out on the patio. We admired the clouds, his new shoes and the birds. He lamented the lack of squirrels around here. Then he had a thought; there are probably lots of squirrels at the park. There was hope.

I put our Linda Ronstadt cd on the stereo in the house and the music floated out through the windows and patio door. "Someone to Watch Over Me" (I think that's the name of it) came on. Daddy said he liked that song. He said it reminded him of me. I smiled and listened to the lyrics; "I'm a little lamb who's lost in the woods, I know I could always be good to one who'll watch over me..." Then I felt the full impact of his compliment. He understands that I'm taking care of him and appreciates it. That made my day. He is a lost little lamb...especially on all those cold trips to the moon.
