This morning Dad tried to maneuver a quick turn (something that's not so easy with those size 12 feet on carpet) and he lost his balance. He fell on his rear and we had to help him up from the floor. He had a full mouth of chewing tobacco so he couldn't answer me when I asked if he was alright. I steadied him and walked him down the hall to the bathroom and told him to spit that stuff out in the toilet.

When he could talk he told me he was alright, but I noticed that he was still unsteady on his feet. I took him to his room and got him undressed and into bed. Pretty soon his sitter, Laura, came to relieve us so we could go to work. She promised to update us on how he was doing throughout the day. Hospice is scheduled to come by and do his weekly check-up.

Scary stuff seeing my 6 ft. dad falling in slow motion onto the floor. My first thought was that he may have hurt his hip.

Just got a text message from Laura. Dad is up and eating breakfast now with no sign of a limp or pain. Dad complains about our carpet being hard to walk on but I think that soft padding saved him from breaking his hip this morning.

Last night was rough for Dad. I put him to bed at about 10 pm but he was back up at 11 p.m. saying he had to go to work. I talked to him about that once again, using the same old words. Daddy you're retired, you don't work anymore. You're 86. You don't have a car. You're all the way in Victoria. You're a long way from Beaumont....

He stayed up all night in his chair. No wonder he was dizzy; lack of sleep and a heavy dose of nicotine on an empty little old stomach.
