I came across this article today, which says the Toronto Zoo is planning on separating Pedro and Buddy, two penguins who for years have shown homosexual mating behaviors.

Though zoo keepers don't tend to identify their mating calls, frolicking and grooming each other as "homosexual," they do call it "pair-bonding," and the zoo is prepared to break Pedro and Buddy's bond in order to have them mate with a female penguin.

According to this article, it's a matter of their species surviving. “The two girls have been following them; we just have to get the boys interested in looking at them,” said Tom Mason, curator of birds and invertebrates at the Toronto Zoo.

The story reminded me of a video I produced for Newsy.com when I was in college. It was about another "gay" penguin couple, Harry and Pepper and.... Harry's newest mistress, Linda!

In the video, various experts on either side of the nature versus nurture debate of homosexuality, provide their opinions on animal sexual behavior.

I can't say I know enough about the sexual habits of animals to have an opinion on what any of this means.

But what do you think about the "gay" penguins?

What do you think about the zoo separating the couple?
