A couple weeks ago we got a last minute note about the annual trail riders coming through town. JR and I went running out the door to find their wagons, trotting down the street from Moody to HEB on Rio Grande. Assignments like this are why I love being a photojournalist in Texas. We get a mix of the old and the new, people embrace history and tradition as much as they do new technology. Sure these trail riders had canvas wagons, but they also had iphones.

There is something special about seeing cowboys reclining on the lawn of HEB, their horses tethered to a billboard as curious onlookers drive by in their hondas and toyotas.

The trail riders talked to me about why they rode on the trail each year. For some it was keeping tradition alive, for others it was the charity aspect or simply the steadfast surety of good companionship, open skies and quiet afternoons.
