Since many have asked what it costs for TKB and others have tried to drag East drill team into this debate regarding costs of fundraisers I decided to do some research. Facility cost based on rates posted at victoriatx.org and calls to stock contractors this is very basic breakdown of costs to put on the event and is not complete but certainly gives you an idea of the dollars spent and how much would need to be generated to raise a net profit and be a successful fundraiser.

This is my cost breakdown if I were to try and replicate TKB and the East Drill team cook off ( i have never organized either event but made many calls, talked to friends in BBQ and rodeo world and emailed for info):

TKB:

Stock contractors quoted me $25,000 to $50,000 so lets take an average of $35,000

Some contractors said adding $5,000 to $10,000 for additional payout would help attract better/more cowboys (not included in figure above but wanted to put info out there that the cost could be higher)

Facility rental (Victoria Community Center):

Annex: $675/ day x 2 days = $1350 Arena: 450/ day x 2 = 900 Concession stand: $200/ day x 2 = 400 set up/teardown fee: 1/2 daily rental = $675 (day before; day after) Overnight security: $150 Kitchen: $150/day x 2 = 300

Total facility rental: $3,775

Bands for dances (2 nights): $3,000 ($1,500 average from my calling around)

Total cost to run TKB: $41,775 before any other expenses such as food, concession items, children's activities, etc.

East BBQ cook off:

Again based on me trying to replicate the event.

Facility rental (Victoria Community Center):

Grounds: $450/ day x 2 days = $900 Overnight Security: $150 Set up/ tear down: $450

Band for entertainment (1 day): $1,500

Does not include costs of children's activities (I would assume no concessions since it is a BBQ cook off and plenty of food is available).

Cost for BBQ Cook off: $3,000

  • St. Joe has a Dance team that wins National trophies. Per dancer, they don't spend as much.

  • Maybe TKB did pay for the bulk of the funding for what the girls did. But this is my question. Why was so much money needed for such elaborate sets? The production part of competition isnt all that. and Id be willing to bet that if TKB suppliers were someone from outside the family, that much efford wouldnt be made. I remember DJ herself telling that her nephew came to her with this great idea. Great for whom>?

  • fARcus, that leads one to believe that the whole think is more for vendors (ie. bull suppliers) than for team funding.

    October 24, 2010 at 7:47 p.m.

  • So farcus, is it your opnion that the tkb is more for outside vendors rather than benefiting the dance team. It appears that way to me

You see I was actually around to see a lot of things. I did see team members quit, I did see moms get upset but I can honestly say that I never saw or heard the threats. There are a lot of things that have been posted in drill team blogs that I could say were not true because I was there that day or that year and I have questioned about give us the specifics. I have not posted any lies only, what i know and what I have seen. And believe you me I was always there, at practices, at competitions, at football games, at making costumes sessions. If I wasn't there other moms were and we did talk about what was going on a daily basis when it came to our girls. I can't believe I missed out on so much going on.

I really don't know what other fundraisers you are talking about because we didn't do anything else but TKB. With TKB you had obligations to fulfill in order to make it a success. For example if you had so many tickets to sell and you didn't sell all of them you were responsible for what you didn't sell.

One year I didn't sell all of four wheeler raffle tickets, I owed $50 on my daughters account. TKB paid all her competition expenses, such as entry fees for the team, transportation, hotels, meals, and her costumes. Not only her expenses but the whole teams as well as the sets. This times 2 to 3 competitions that they would go to whether in state or out of state. So you are telling me that TKB didn't pay for squat? You are so wrong. Lots of hard work on the teams part, their families, and DJs.

Have you ever seen the past teams perform? I mean competition dances, exhibitions, not just at football games. One competition season they might have done 4 dances, another year 5 or 6. Add up all the sets, the costumes, make-up, travel expenses, entry fees, etc. And don't say what a waste. Everyone worked hard for our kids because that's what they wanted to do and we were there to support them in their endeavors. You want to win, you gotta do big things to win and DJ knows what it takes to win.

So please tell me about the fundraisers I didn't know I was supposed to do since you do know so much about this drill team? I think my $50 went a long ways.

  • no its not about an axe to grind . it goes deeper than that. you cant speak until you have witnessed what this director is capable of. Dont let her fool you with her advocate article about how she has done nothing wrong. Just wait till a team member quits or says something in defense and then you will see her true colors...

  • "I know for a fact that TKB does pay for competitions expenses. You had to fulfill your obligations and you saw no other impending costs."
So if this one event covered everything, why were other fundraisers needed?
If the Dance Team wasn't apart of TKB this year, who paid for all the expenses and who has the profit?

    October 23, 2010 at 9:43 p.m.

  • Rosie,
You have nooooooo clue. TKB doesn't pay for jack!!! You paid for TKB then you paid for your daughters competition fees in other fundraisers. You are just one more parent who had the wool pulled over your eyes. blah blah blah.....

  • Well Duece apparently you have plenty of time on your hands. Why don't you try to post on something more constructive than your speculations about TKB and the drill team. You just don't want to let it go. Let the TKB fundraisers, the drill team team, and the school sort it out. This project took money to put on but it had always brought the money back in. It was set up for the drill team and the drill team members are the ones that are going to benefit.

I know for a fact that TKB does pay for competitions expenses. You had to fulfill your obligations and you saw no other impending costs. In the earlier years there were no dances so I actually do not know about the income from those but I do know that TKB did pay for my daughters competition expenses. I know there were times that we did not sell and might have been responsible for some account balances but I knew of many girls that did everything and they had cleared accounts.

The bull riders put on a fantastic show as they were professionals riding prime bulls. Of course that was not free and parents knew that was an added expense to bring them in.

I feel all those posters that have the inside scoop are just ex drill team parents that have an ax to grind with DJ not because of the way money might have been spent or handled but because they have their personal vendetta because probably someones feelings were hurt. These parents are using their drill team knowledge to hurt the drill team and DJ. To those parents just let it go and be glad your child has moved on and grown up. My daughters were good dancers and their feelings might have been hurt because they didn't make a dance, or become an officer but they were not quitters or held grudges. They loved the dance, they loved and respected DJ and they became winners.

I'm not for West, I'm not for East. I wish both schools and drill teams the best of luck. Sad to say my children have no Alma mater to go back to. Biggest mistake was consolidation, that falls on the school board.

Yes go Golden Sabers! You go Legacy Dance Team!!!! Saw you dance Friday night for the first time and y'all were awesome and y'all looked awesome. Brought back many good memories.

    October 23, 2010 at 8:28 p.m.

  • Let's not forget the family tie in with the bull riding event. Bo is a relative of DJ. How much did he make from the events for the last ten years?

    October 23, 2010 at 11:35 a.m.

  • And to think the TKB has been going on for the last 10 years!! Where did the money go? Hmmmmm.......

    October 23, 2010 at 8:57 a.m.

  • The girls will never see any money from TKB. No money has been deposited into the sundry account and never will. Hope the parents that worked so hard have learned their lesson about How SHE works!

    October 22, 2010 at 9:29 p.m.

  • According to UIL- "Money given to a school cannot be earmarked for any particular expense. Booster clubs may make recommendations, but cash or other valuable consideration must be given to the school to use at its discretion." So- even if TKB this year makes a donation.... Does the ISD have the ability to use that money as it deems useful???? Because, prior to the event, I noticed the profits made were "earmarked" for the drill team...HMMMMM........

    October 22, 2010 at 9:08 p.m.

  • I have an inside scoop. Total cost for TKB for stock producer, facility rental, prize money, consession and all paid out expenses have ranged between $59,000.00-$63,000 for the past 5 years.
That is all cost before the team makes a penny in profit.

Food for thought.........$60 grand would make for tons of BBQ! Just a wild guess but this being the very first fundraiser for the East Drill Team and the booster club having operated along side the West booster club last year. Also worked as a group for TKB for years, I would say they have followed all the rules and guidlines and learned by watching others mistakes. Just guessing?
East will walk away with a good profit. I would guess they will have no problem showing their books and depositing their money with VISD. Amazing what can be accomplished when you follow the rules.

  • Go w/the BBQ!!!! We're going this weekend; GO GOLDEN SABERS!!!!!
