I was walking with 22 Iraqis, on a rare occasion in a military base. I saw a handwashing station and thought it would be a good time to wash off some of this brown, fine powdery dirt that seems to blow everywhere. As we approached the handwashing station, one of the Iraqis noticed something on the ground. He asked me what it was. In astonishment, I asked him "You don't know?" He said that he did not. I asked all 22 of them if they knew what it was. I couldn't believe it, so I told the interpreter to ask them, even though all of them spoke english. No, No, No, all of them shook their heads. I told them that it was a woman's tampon. They had no idea what it was used for. "What for?, What for?" So, I did my best to explain to them how a woman might use it. I then removed it from the wrapper, pulled the string until the cotton part came out of the cardboard thing (I don't even like to look at them) and I cupped it in my hand underneath the running water for about 30 seconds as they looked on. When I opened my hand, I saw the biggest eyes I've ever seen. It was as if they had seen a ghost. Finally, one of them spoke.........."AAAAHHHHH..... TECHNOLOGY !!!!"
