Dear Alice: I am terrified of going to the doctor. Even though I'm 17, shots scare me so much that I cry every time I have to go get them. How can I stop being so afraid of someone who is supposed to help me? - Drained by the Doctor

Dear Drained by the Doctor: Like you said, doctors and nurses are there to help you feel better. I know that they can be really scary, and I'm still afraid of shots! However, they don't do anything on purpose to hurt you or make you feel bad. Try to find out what exactly scares you about the doctor's office, because finding the source of the fear can help you overcome it. Maybe if you brought someone you trusted with you to the doctor, you'd feel safer about being at the doctor and you'd have a comforting hand to hold. Also, tell your doctor about your fears; they will understand and should help you feel less scared. So take a good friend or parent, and just try to relax while the doctor makes you well again! Lots of love, Alice
