Today we honor mothers.

We honor the mother who brought us into the world and raised and nurtured us.

Some will also honor others who are like mothers to them in some way.

For me that list would be long but it would include my mother -in-law, step-mother-in-law, a couple of aunts, my sisters, sisters-in-law, and a couple of close friends.

While I have never had children I would like to think I possess mothering skills that I share along the way.

I recently had dinner with a friend who I had not seen in a long time. In our evening of eating and catching up, he said I was like a mother to him at times.

He said I guided him, encouraged him and even scolded him when he needed it. He gave me examples. He brought back some great memories.

I filled with pride thinking I had that much impact on his life.

I do not know if I have had similar impact on anyone else’s life, but I hope I have.

As we were parting company that night, I asked him to keep in touch and to do me a favor – pay the influence I had on his life forward – help someone the way I helped him. He said he would.

I believe he will.

That is the least any mother could ask for.
