Many thanks to the Goliad County Chamber of Commerce, Goliad law enforcement agencies, 4-H groups, volunteers and Mother Nature for a wonderful bicycle ride this past Saturday in Goliad.

There were about 100 or so of us riders, from near and far, gathering on the Courthouse Square, ready for the 8 a.m. start to the various ride routes. Although it was early in the morning, riders seemed energized and happy. Some came as individuals, others came with riding teams and used this ride for training.

I was happy to see my ride buddy, John Rodriguez, from Corpus Christi. He joined me for the 30-mile ride. After the first couple of small climbs, I found myself getting slightly winded but after the second rest stop, I got my second wind and picked up the pace.

Sally, Jesse and Ray joined us a little later in the ride and John set the pace, averaging about 12.8 miles per hour. These three folks were also from Corpus Christi and drove up to Goliad just for this ride.

We got word that one of our fellow bicyclists was injured early in the ride and an ambulance was dispatched. I don't know the extent of the injuries or how this person fared. Other than that, it was a beautiful day and a wonderful ride. John and I finished in just under three hours (approximately 2 hours, 28 minutes pedaling time). A small group of volunteers cheered each rider as they reached the finish line in Courthouse Square.

After the ride, I met and chatted briefly with Eva and Nancy. These Houston ladies rode part of the Goliad ride with me last year, and remembered me. I don't know of any more area rides but there is one in Gruene, near New Braunfels, on Saturday, Oct. 30. You can always check www.texbiker.org for a listing of rides throughout Texas.
