Sexual assaults and burglaries continue to rise in February, according to crime statistics released by the Victoria Police Department.
While reported crime across the board shows a slight decrease from January numbers, compiled crime between January and February is up from last year.
Three rapes were reported in February, bringing the reported year total (January through February) to 12, a 200 percent increase from last year. A recent change in the definition of rape by the FBI is a contributing factor, Police Chief J.J. Craig commented in a story I published Monday.
In 2011, the FBI announced it was changing the definition of rape used in the collection of national crime statistics. Reporting agencies were allowed two years to adjust the way they reported sexual assaults to the government.
There were 33 burglaries in February, bringing the reported year total (January through February) to 81, a 17.4 percent increase from January and February numbers reported last year.
Motor vehicle theft continues to decrease in February. Five offenses were reported, bringing the year-to-date statistics (January through February) down 41 percent.
