We are getting a puppy in a few weeks. We have been thinking about getting a dog and thought about going the schnauzer route, since my parents have one, my brother has one and we have friends that have one. Not to mention, they make great dogs. However, $300 to $500 for a puppy is a little steep, especially on top of a $500 pet deposit. Besides that in some places in Houston (and I've seen them in Victoria) there are breeders and puppy mills lining the streets and sometimes you just don't know what your getting. It's really sad, but I'll save that for another blog.
A homely, pregnant stray found her way to my boyfriends sister's house. She's not a prize winner in the looks department, but she is a loyal, sweetheart of a dog. We don't know what she is or what she bred with. We think she is a chihuahua daschund mix that is a grey dapple (although I have heard it referred to as blue merle).
About four weeks ago, we went over to his sister's and noticed that her belly had gotten bigger. We all decided that indeed she was pregnant. The next day, five little puppies were born. 4 boys (2 white with spots, 1 just like his mom, and the other grey with tan markings) and 1 little girl, who has a problem with her left eye. We immeditly decided to take the grey one. We didn't know how hard it would be for her to find homes for them and it sucks to see a puppy go to a shelter or the pound because it doesn't have a home. (Luckily - all the puppies have been spoken for. The little girl puppy will be flying to Ohio with my boyfriend's brother-in-law; one may stay with them and the mother; and the other two males have homes in the area).
We are getting ready and purchased a few things. Also, trying to figure out how to introduce the ferrets to a puppy will be a challenge; however Chloe tried to play with my parent's dog, but scared the dog. I'm not sure how Buster will do, I'm sure fine.
Our new problem is we can't think of a name. Maybe we should wait until we bring him home and see what fits him, maybe we should have a name. We have decided to have people help us with a name or give us ideas.
We were changing cell phone companies last night and as I walked around the Radio Shack looking at merchadise and watching a basketball game I started writing names down out of sheer boredom. Barkley - seemed to be one that we liked and is now the front runner.
We tried Vegas themed names, since we love Las Vegas and go there every year. We have toyed if with regular dog names, popular dog names and just silly ideas.
So do you want to help name our dog? We sure could use the help.

you should name him Alfred. I certainly know at least one Alfred who's a dog, why not have another that actually has four legs and a tail instead? They both need housetraining and manners. They both have to learn how to behave around people. They both kiss, er, sniff their own a$$. It's a perfect name. Course, I am a wee bit biased...
May 8, 2008 at 3:56 p.m.Although I never met him, I think your Buffy is one-of-a-kind. i wouldn't want to take his name. hahahaha
April 30, 2008 at 6:14 p.m.I hear Buffy is a great name for a dog. Sure, it scars them for life and gets them beat up at the dog park, but in the end, it will only make them stronger.
April 30, 2008 at 6:10 p.m.I have a mutt named Barkley...got his name cuz he's a little guy but he thinks he's a BIG guy....yapps all the time, kinda like Charles Barkley. We have a large breed dog named Duncan cuz he was born on 4-25 which is Tim Duncans B-Day & we are big Spurs fans. He is just like Duncan as he is a gentle giant and Barkley worships him as his human counter part worships the human Duncan.
April 30, 2008 at 5:45 p.m.I like to see a little of their personalities before I decide on a name. Good Luck & congrats on your new addition.
We have 4 dogs, 3 cats and a ferret. Our Border collie is named "Little Jake" after his father; our schnauzer was already named when we "rescued" her -- Abby (or Abigal when she is in trouble); our poodle/terrier mix was also a rescue and was named Sam... my son's name is Sam, so we decided to change it.... but that's a long legal process so we now call the dog "Taz", and it fits!!! Next, we have a miniture daschund that I rescued from one of my tenants when I was managing an apartment complex.... we call him Hercules. When he came to us, he was so tiny, but fiesty! He took hold of the border collie's tail and wouldn't let go... it just reminded me of the Eddie Murphy movie --- Our cat Oreo, obviously is black and white.... was "dumped" in our neighborhood. A few weeks later, she gave birth to 3 black & white kittens.... one was given to a friend.... we kept a male and a female... thier names were inspired by my husbands favorite show: Deadliest Catch. Capt'n Sig and Corniellia Marie... Our ferret came to us via my college bound son.... he didn't realize you couldn't have pets in the dorm.... His name is Barrett not very original I know....
April 30, 2008 at 5:34 p.m.I had a schnauzer in the past whose name was Boudreaux, and a cocatiel named Thibideaux....
Good luck with your name choosing....
Thanks Amber - I like Paws. We thought about Elvis, but decided we liked Keno and BlackJack better. I really like Rupert. Thanks!
April 30, 2008 at 1:08 p.m.I had this very problem with my kitten and snake so here's a few ideas for your puppies name...... The names are a bit inspired by shows I watch sometimes......
April 30, 2008 at 1:04 p.m.House (Hugh Lorey's Character) Austin (fav capital) Clint (book inspired) Dapple (the moms? color) Elvis (obvious)
Paws (I thought it was funny) Rupert (blame Fam Guy) Gryphon (don't ask)
Those are the ones I came up with so far. Hope this helps. Yes I'm very different on animal names.
Funny you should say Bevo. My boyfriend is a UT grad and we have tossed that one around. (We had a parakeet name Mac Brown). We thought about Cooper (the name of the stuffed longhorn I got at the UT store). I will add it to consideration. Thanks!
