Our second group blog from VISD's Community of Excellence focuses on Mentoring and Support Services. As a reminder, these committees are aimed at getting the community involved, working together with the schools, to keep students focused on their future through education.

The Mentoring and Support Services committee has set goals to develop a plan for a peer mentoring program where seniors from the high school campuses would mentor students at Elementary & Middle Schools. This idea was brought about because of the overwhelmingly positive response from students and teachers when seniors visited elementary campuses on a day that other high school students were taking the PSAT. Everyone agreed that all students involved benefited from this interaction. This committee will also continue to build on the mentoring programs currently in the schools, trying to grow the number of community members who volunteer to mentor students with schoolwork, social pressures, the importance of education or simply to be a positive and encouraging influence in their life.

Our third goal is to assist other community groups in developing a comprehensive list of child and family resources, that is up to date and readily accessible to professionals, volunteers and others who work with our students and their families. We would like to promote networking and collaboration among the many entities that strive to help children and families.

If you are interested in working one on one with students or helping to coordinate community services for children and families, we need you on our committee. Our next committee meeting is December 19, 2012 at 6:15 pm at the Victoria West Library. You can contact Diana Rigamonti at 361-788-2830 for more information about this committee.
