I'm meeting former NFL coach Bum Phillips, now a Goliad rancher and philanthropist, next week.

He and his wife, Debbie, are traveling to San Antonio to watch a Dallas Cowboys mini-camp practice, and to catch up with their son, Wade Phillips, head coach of America's Team.

It's rare to get to spend so much time with a former NFL head coach, and even rarer to witness up-close a visit with his son, who leads the Cowboys into an important, T.O.-less year.

While I wish I could invite you along for the ride and into the Cowboys' practice, I just don't think Phillips' SUV could fit all of us :)

That said, I'd still like to take your questions with me. If you were able to spend the day with Bum Phillips, what questions would you ask?

I will print out a list of your questions and ask them of the famous Texan as we drive to San Antonio.

Thanks for your input,

  • Ask him about another couple of hand-me-down stories: How did he get his name (Bum)? What I heard was that when he was a youngster (in the '40s), he worked as a hand on a ranch near Orange. My late husband's aunt Ruby Delano and her husband Harold Wade (2nd story = Wade Phillups was named after Harold Wade Delano) worked there as well -- she as chief cook and bottle washer and he as foreman. Bum was forever catching cat naps wherever he could and would have to be woken up and told to get to work -- hence the name 'Bum'... Is it true, Bum?

  • mythoughts..."www,if you still worked out at the airport you would get to see him. He flies in quite a bit.:)"

I don't ever remember seeing him in the terminal for a commercial flight. I bet he flies in private/charter/corporate aircraft. I worked for the airline. I'd have loved to have seen him again. Coach Phillips is a truely good man. Anyone who has known him is better for the experience.

  • Ask him if he has some hay for sale.

And those were exchange students out building that fence...

  • I would ask Bum what he thinks about Roger Goddell's conduct policy and whether or not he thinks the rules protecting QBs have made the NFL sissified. During Bum's heyday in the NFL, the league was FULL of characters and moves like the Clothesline were legal. I'd also like to know what he would have done with guys like Pacman, Plaxico, Mike Vick and Randy Moss (pre-New England) had they been on his roster.

  • gabe,
ask if its true that the domes ventilation was turned on or off for the aided field goals in oilers favor or vise versa kicking against the wind by opponents.

i heard some time ago that the astros did this as well when power hitters came up to bat....

  • I'd like to ask Bum if he ever makes it to any local high school games, namely My beloved Cuero Gobblers. I too would like to know his thoughts on Bud Adams, But I know Bum is too much of a gentleman to publicly give his thoughts on that Texas turncoat Bud.

  • Thanks for the questions. RFelton: I'll pass your kind remarks on.

  • I was an Oiler fan since the George Blanda days but never more proud of them than when Bum was coach. I saw him on the Tonight Show once so somebody else must have noticed that Bum had more charm and character than anyone I can think of at the moment. My wife and I would be thrilled and honored to meet him someday.

    Now the question:

Does Bum ever visit or hear from any of the Oilers he coached like Earl Campbell or Dan Pastorini? Favorite Oiler memory? Any thoughts about Bud Adams?

    Sorry, that was three questions...

When the Oilers left Houston, I don't think I ever watched an entire football game since. Bum said the Oilers don't matter anymore but I respectfully disagree. Win or lose Bum Phillips and the Oilers were football at its absolute best in its finest hour. That level of excellence and excitement that the Oilers brought to Houston will always matter. Luv Ya Blue!

  • What would you ask Bum Phillips?

When do you think the Texans will kick that sumnabeesh in?

  • Ask him if he remembers coaching at Port Neches-Groves High School. Wade was our quarter-back and (I think) middle linebacker. He was a better linebacker than quarter-back, but Wade looked good giving the ball to Mike Simpson, a REALLY fast half-back. Wade and Mike followed Coach Phillips to UH and when Coach went to the Chargers, he got them to draft Mike as a corner back. It's amazing how much Coach Phillips still looks like the pictures in my year books. Coach Phillips is as fine a man as I EVER met or ever hope to meet.
