Why feature an illegal immigrant in the paper?

Today's story about Julio Lopez and the issues surrounding illegal immigration are drawing several online remarks already today. Here, I want to explain why we featured Lopez's story.

Simply put: Our Fatal Funnel series aims to explore all sides of immigration and border issues that complicate South Texas. During the last year, we've also documented Mexican drug violence, citizens who stand at the border to spot and report illegal immigration, as well as the movement to offer refuge to those who seek a life here.

By documenting the people and the activities, we hopefully gain a better understanding of the issues, which arms us all with the information needed to create lasting solutions.
