Robert Zavala, Advocate multi-media editor, is beginning work on a new newspaper series and possibly a new lifestyle.
Amid a move from one home to the other, he had the idea to move from conventional TV to other alternatives.
He gathers data now on using the Internet to feed his TV programming and movie needs. He wants to know if this is easy to do and if enough online content supports the idea.
The financial savings seem clear. Problems most certainly will arise, however. His wife loves HGTV. Can you watch this channel legally online?
Robert said he doesn't want to re-invent the wheel. Do you have experiences that can guide his stories and choices in the new home?
If so, contact Robert at rzavala@vicad.com or comment in here.
Thanks for your help,
Gabe Semenza / Advocate public service editor

Archie...I HIGHLY recommend Netflix. My subscription is about nine bucks a month. For that, I get one DVD at a time plus all the streaming movies I can watch. Recently, I was off work after some surgery and I wore out Netflix! Watch a DVD when it comes in, and send it back the next day. Three days later, the next one shows up in the mail. In between, streaming movies till you can't remember what you watched. I don't much care for most movies being made today, but I do dearly love a lot of the old ones and Netflix has'em. Only a couple of times have I entered a movie name and Netflix didn't have it. You can try it for two weeks for free. Well worth it.
October 13, 2009 at 6:05 p.m.It's nothing special...we don't even have most of the movie channels! That does include high speed internet, but that only accounts for $10/month. We need to shop around don't we...any suggestions?
October 13, 2009 at 2:05 p.m.$145.00 a month??? Good God, what kind of cable service do you have?
October 13, 2009 at 1:39 p.m.I cancelled mine along time ago. There was a whole bunch of channels with nothing to watch. My family does fine with just the on air channels, and it's nice not have that bill.
October 13, 2009 at 11:37 a.m.I would love it if my husband let us cancel our cable! Maybe if I let him send off the $145 payment every month he would realize how ridiculous it is. I'm interested to see what you find out here.
October 13, 2009 at 11:14 a.m.Thanks, Rebecca. You made our day :)
