I'm beginning work on a story about a Yoakum woman who lives by choice without air conditioning in the home.

This cost-saving, energy-saving move is especially interesting this year, I think. August was one of the hottest on record.

What measures do you take to stay cool and simultaneously save money and energy?

Could you live without air conditioning?

Thanks for your help,

  • It's already being considered...

  • PLEASE! DON'T SAY TOO MUCH ABOUT LIVING WITHOUT A/C!
Obama might be reading the Vicad and put restrictions on a/c use!

  • I grew up with no A/C, schools didn't have them except for the office and the new science building. Yup it was hot and gnats bothered you but we didn't mind because we didn't know any better.

I could do without A/C and do on vacations to our family place but at home I choose to be cool and pay the bill for doing so.

  • Just asking this question reveals how pampered and out of touch the author is.

  • I can recall when only the wealthy could afford A/C and Central Heat. We live in a wonderful country that allows most American's the blessing to afford to live with A/C. It is not only the cooliness that A/C brings, but it helps keep the bugs out.
The standard of living has greatly improved over the last 62 years. We not only have A/C in our homes, but in our cars, in the stores, hospitals, court houses, and etc. Most people have televisions, microwaves, a frig, a bath or shower, indoor toilets, indoor running water, carpet, and radio.
I save money by having a garden, keeping the a/c high in the summer, keeping the central heat low in the winter, and turn lights off in rooms no one is in.

  • Lived without AC into my 20's. After hearing the comment about the bricks --guess that was part of the problem. Bought a home with large sliding walls and like to open them up. But you need fans to circulate air. It is the mesquitos that don't understand they are suppose to stay outside.

Am moving again where I have windows and we plan on building the Texas porch. I hope there are days I don't have to have AC. But being a zebra, I do have to stay cool with moving air or something.

I do remember being hot in school and sweat pouring down your face. And the blackout curtains. Anyone remember the blackout curtains we had to have? And why? I know. Sometimes we had drills with them. The school was a designated community gathering place....
All that human sweat would have been yucky.

  • I couldn't. I would move to Seattle in a heart beat. Just can't get anyone else to go with me. I am always hot. We sleep best at about 50 degrees.

  • Been there, done that, don't want to do it again if I can help it.

  • *One* semester I stayed in the unairconditioned dorm at SWT. I was on the second floor and on the top bunk. We were always sweaty, always drinking water, and always scantly clad. Staying hydrated was a social event and it was the one dorm that I actually remember spending more time OUTSIDE. It was hell at first but the body acclimates. It did make me love October AND THE RIVER.

  • Raised without AC. No AC cars. First 10 years of marriage no AC. Just big window fans.

It has been and can be done. But we do get spoiled. Many people freeze my wife and I out. We don't keep the AC at home real cold at all. Just comfortable.

  • I grew up without A/C at home. There was no A/C at school either. I lived without A/C for 7 days against my will after hurricane Claudette hit. Not Pretty. The kids left after the first day. The husband left after the second day to go back to work out of state. If it happens again I will leave also. If someone wants to steal something out of my unairconditioned home they can have it. It was torture! I could live without A/C but would not do it if I had a choice.

  • I'm sure I could live without a/c. When I was a kid, we would spend our summers at grandma's in Mexico, it was very hot but there was not one a/c in that house. To this day she still doesn't have them. Actually, I'm looking forward to the temperature drop and windy autumn afternoons. It feels great opening up all the windows in the house. Running the a/c means being closed in all day, not comfortable at all.

  • Danger! Danger! Hot middle aged woman inside! Danger! That's what the signs would read all around my house without air conditioning.....

  • Brick houses are the problem. When those bricks heat up, it's like being in a oven. I have my outdoor temperature thingy hanging right by the brick, and it showed above 100° (mostly above 105°) every day of June, July, and August. If I put the device out under the oak trees, or even in the direct sun, it was usually 100° or below.
If I had it to do all over again, there would be no brick on my house and I would have wrap-around screened-in porches.

  • I grew up in a home that was built in the turn of the century and have lived in one as an adult. We had AC units and only used them if needed. The way the houses were built back then you could open all of the windows and open the "vents" in the attic and it would feel like you had an AC. Especially if the windows were built facing the right direction. lol I would live without AC in a house like that. However, the newer homes are hotter inside than outside. (I know my AC went out for 2 weeks.) So I would vote NO.

  • We had our first A/C given to us by a nice old lady moving up to Central air. I was 13 at the time. It was put in the kitchen(window unit). That's one way to make sure everyone sits at the table for supper..

  • Ok, I'll have to admit it...I'm spoiled! I couldn't do with out my a/c.

    September 2, 2009 at 1:08 p.m.

  • I too lived without A/C most of my early life. I was younger then and didn't have these danged hot flashes, so I wouldn't die without A/C, but I would probably make my family wish I would. J/K

  • Could I live without air conditioning? Yes, I could. Would I want to? H%^&# NO! I'll eat beans and rice to save grocery money to keep the A/C running.

    September 2, 2009 at 12:34 p.m.

  • Less than sixty years ago, only the picture show and maybe one or two restaurants had air conditioning. We really did not know about a/c and never complained about the lack of it.
