Hi, everyone. My name is Gheni Platenburg, and I cover courts and diversity stories for The Advocate. If you want to know more about me, check out my bio at http://www.victoriaadvocate.com/staff/gheni-platenburg/ .

We’re doing things a little differently now, as far as our staff blogs are concerned. We’re using our beat-related blogs to keep you informed of what stories we have in the works and also to potentially solicit feedback on the work we are doing. Readers should consider my blog to be their one stop shop for all things related to diversity and courts in The Crossroads. As you have probably noticed this week, here at The Advocate, we're working on gathering The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) ratings and scores for the school districts in our coverage counties. Next week, we'll return to our regularly scheduled reporting.

Here’s a sneak peak of what I’ll be working on next week:

  1. Quinceañera(o): I’m taking an in-depth of this traditional ceremony and how they have evolved over the years, particularly with our current economic climate. I’m still looking to interview a boy who is having a Quinceañero sometime in the near future. If you know a boy who fits this description, please send him my way.
  2. Language: Are Spanish/non-Spanish speakers having a hard time finding or keeping a job because of their inability to speak English or Spanish. If you know anyone who fits that description, please let me know.

If you have a story idea that you want to share, please feel free to do so.I can be reached via email at gplatenburg@vicad.com or via phone at 361-580-6521. I hope to hear from you.
