June is a busy month for commemorations and awareness for various causes.

It is National Safety Month, American Rivers Month and even Adopt a Shelter cat month.

I'd also like to plug that although it's not the whole month, we do celebrate Juneteenth on June, 19, and you check out our local Juneteenth feature story about slave descendants still living on former plantation land by clicking this link.

But I digress.

Although June is jam-packed with various events designed to make us reflect on things, did you know that June is also Black Music Month?

On June 7, 1979, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the month of June as Black Music Month.

Throughout the month of June, the musical contributions of black artists --past and present --are recognized.

Many radio stations, including KBXX 97.9 and Magic 102 have celebrated he month with concerts and more.

During each year of his term, President Barack Obama has announced the national observance of the month under the new title, African-American Music Appreciation Month.

In recognition of the month, here is a listing of 22 black artists who have earned their place on the list of all-time best-selling albums in the U.S.:
