MTV Español is out, MTV Tr3s (Tres) is in. Say hello to the cross-combination of English and Spanish, and say hello to yet another MTV channel. (How many does that make now?)

From (Houston Chronicle)

The channel will target young Hispanics, 12 to 34, from "both worlds," meaning Spanish and U.S. orientation. It will employ both Spanish and English language and offer primarily music programs, emphasizing pop, urban and rock. Future programs, including news and documentary shows, will embrace American and Hispanic cultures, said Lucia Ballas-Traynor, general manager of MTV Español.

MTV president Christina Norman called the launch a "validation" of the most underserved youth segments in the United States. She said the new channel will be dedicated to transcending language, nativity, gender and race. Surveys show this audience segment is bilingual and draws its culture from both English and Hispanic worlds.

"If Juanes is interviewed, we'll conduct the interview in the language he's most comfortable with, Spanish, but we'll also provide English subtitles," said Ballas-Traynor.

I don't have MTV (I don't even have cable), but the few times I've had the chance to watch MTV at a friend's house, all I ever see on that channel are some lame reality shows about snotty kids going to prom or shows that showcase the diamond-encrusted toilet seat of some egomaniacal rap star. Sorry MTV, that's just not my idea of entertainment. I hope they do a better job with their programming with MTV Tres. If they can do half as well as Mun2 then it may be something I would actually watch.

MTV Tres isn't the only channel of its kind. This follows the recent launches of other MTV channels such as MTV Chi, which targets Chinese Americans, and MTV Desi, which serves audiences with roots in the Indian subcontinent living in the U.S. Then you have all of the MTV international channels including: Europe, Germany, Canada, Holland, Italy, Japan, Nordic, Poland, Romania, Spain, UK, Brazil, Base Africa, Australia and a few others you can find at this link.
