Imagine the horror of many across the world when they couldn't send out a tweet on Twitter or access Facebook. How would the world know what they had for breakfast or which Twilight character they are most likely to date?!

This morning social media sites Twitter and Facebook experienced issues. Twitter was said to be "defending against a denial-of-service attack," and Facebook was experiencing site problems.

NEW YORK – A hacker attack Thursday shut down the fast-growing messaging service Twitter, and Facebook also said it was looking into possible site problems.

Twitter said in its status blog Thursday that it was "defending against a denial-of-service attack," in which hackers command scores of computers to a single site at the same time, preventing legitimate traffic from getting through.

For Twitter users, the outage meant no tweeting about lunch plans, the weather or the fact that Twitter is down.

The Twitter outage began at about 9 a.m. EDT, said Ken Godskind, chief strategy officer at Web performance monitoring company AlertSite.

No big deal, right? I bet a lot of businesses experienced a surge in worker productivity this morning.

However, not so great for me. As the interactivity editor, part of my job is updating and maintaining the Victoria Advocate's Twitter(@vicadvocate) account and Facebook (www.facebook.com/VictoriaAdvocate) page, so I didn't get to do much of that this morning. It seems like the sites are back to normal for now, so keep an eye out, maybe I'll post a pic of my lunch or this cool rock I found in the parking lot.
