Dallas-based wireless telecommunications giant AT&T Inc. has suffered a wireless network outage across San Antonio and other parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

The outage has made it impossible for many customers to send and receive e-mails and other data via its high-speed 3G network and over its older wireless data network. Affected devices display a message saying, "data connection refused."

AT&T spokesman Mike Barger said it's unclear how soon the company can fix the problem.

"We’re working on it right now," he said.

The outage is the result of cut in a large-capacity fiber-optic line, Barger added.

I first noticed I had no access to my e-mail or Internet on my cell phone this morning, so the first thing I did was go to Twitter and see if anyone else was experiencing the same thing. It appears I was not the only one. The Data Outages Blog has a post that indicates this outage started at 9:40 a.m., and there is not ETA on when it will be fixed.

I found another update on the Statesman Business blog:

AT&T says mobile data outage is fixed
By American Statesman staff | Monday, February 2, 2009, 02:48 PM
UPDATE: AT&T said its 3G mobile data services were restored about 3 p.m. while its 2G services were restored about 2:30 p.m.
Thousands of AT&T cell phone customers in Austin, Houston, San Antonio and South Texas were without data services Monday after a main fiber-optic line was cut in North Texas, the company said.
Cell phone voice service was not affected.
A fiber cable cut near McKinney, north of Dallas, at about 10 a.m. Monday brought down data service for part of AT&T’s high-speed 3G network. Some phones with lower-speed 2G data service also were affected.
AT&T service crews were still working to repair the cable cut and restore service at 2:30 p.m.
    AT&T released the following statement:
“Due to a cable cut, some AT&T customers in South Texas are currently not able to access data services from their wireless devices. All voice services are operating normally. AT&T technicians are at the site of the cable cut at this time, and will work to have this issue resolved as soon as possible. We will provide more information as it becomes available.”
