Summer is here and the community blood supply can feel it. Every summer, kids are let out from school and families start traveling. As a result, shortages of blood types happen during this time of year. With a dip in donations over the recent Memorial Day weekend, we are working hard to maintain the community blood supply at adequate levels for the tough summer ahead.

This year, we’d like to encourage people who have never donated blood to learn about it and give it a try. The feeling of saving a life is like no other, and in our experience, it’s something you’ll want to continue to do. After all, it’s one of the easiest ways to give back to your community. Learn more about donating blood here.

We also want to remind students that the need for blood continues even when you’re not in school and you can always donate at your local donor room at 1109 Sam Houston Dr. Local teens and college students make up 23 percent of our community supply, so when you’re not there, we definitely feel the pinch.

Whether you’re a regular donor, a first-time donor, student, worker or retired, South Texas patients need you to roll up your sleeves this summer. You won’t walk away empty handed either. All presenting donors will receive a T-shirt and platelet donors are being rewarded with a movie ticket or gift card until June 17. Keep up with us on Facebook and Twitter by searching Connect for Life, or visit southtexasblood.org for our latest promotions.
