The Board of Directors of VPAC; Inc., the owner of the Welder Center, is considering the exhibition of films in the Borchers Auditorium. The Board is seeking public input toward the idea of sponsoring film series catering to a variety of tastes, including but not limited to Independent Films, series that focus on particular Directors, Genres, Actors, and Periods in filmmaking not regularly exhibited at local cinemas. The schedule contemplated would be regular showings on weekends, including matinee screenings. The cost for tickets would be priced at the lowest level possible for maximum interest. Included in some series could be brief lectures on the particulars of each series. The Board would retrofit the Borchers Auditorium to ensure an enjoyable viewing experience to the public, without altering the venue's mission of serving the needs of the Performing Arts. Upgrades in sound quality, full screen, and projection equipment will be installed to ensure a quality product. The Board does not promise IMAX quality sound, nor 3D projection, but does promise that the public will not feel disappointed with the experience. The cost of the retrofit would be paid through private sources, no public money will be used. Your opinions on the viability of this concept are important to the Board as to whether to proceed with the project. Respectfully, Robert J. Hewitt, Jr. President, VPAC; Inc.

  • This is an excellent idea. It will bring people downtown after dark. It will help to turn main street into the entertainment district it can be.

  • It's very great to hear this! I'm directing "Roundball" in July in Victoria and I'm proud engage with a town that is taking its art and film culture seriously. I would definitely support this movement! See you guys in July!

  • Absolutely! And include the Main Street Program director who can coordinate a "downtown night" in Victoria. Promote dinner and a movie, ice cream or casual stroll around the square. This can be the kernel around which the downtown jewel reemerges.

  • That would be awesome...kinda like the Bijou....Victoria could really use a venue such as that! Very generous offer Mr. Hewitt!

  • You can count me an automatic customer. For a town of Victoria's size, there's no reason why we should lack for movie choices. Our one theater features the same heap of heavily marketed Hollywood flicks you can see in any town, any place in Texas.

So bring on the timeless classics, the foreign films, the forgotten gems of cinema. The Welder Center is a great location, too. Walking distance to bars, restaurants... and my apartment in Old Vic. A privately run, independent movie theater could sow the seeds of a real nightlife in Victoria.

  • Please, please, please bring independent films to town.
