Hi there. Happy Monday.
We're set with our A1 and B1 centerpieces, which could be interchangeable, depending on which we like better for A1. The two centerpieces are:
A Character of the Crossroads feature on Bobby Benavides Sr., a Port Lavaca pool shark by ranging reporter J.R. Ortega. Here's an early first look at that story:
Bobby Benavides Sr. is right on cue. The 54-year-old Port Lavaca native has been playing pool since 12 years old and recently placed on the national level.
In May, Benavides placed third at the masters division level at the Billiards Congress of America Pool League National 8-ball Championship held in Las Vegas.
His dad had an influence on his passion, he said.
“After church he would take us to pool halls and let us play a couple of hours,” Benavides said.
The other centerpiece contender is a feature on the Goliad valedictorian and salutatorian, who are double first cousins by ranging reporter Julian Cavazos. Here's an early first look at that story:
GOLIAD – They were like brother and sister. They did everything together.
Both were in National Honor Society, the Spanish Club and the Science Club while at Goliad High School. They ate lunch together.
When he was playing football, she was head cheerleader. And when he was valedictorian, she was salutatorian of a class of 94 seniors.
This is what life had been like for double first cousins Don Barnett and Dakota Barnett.
Their mothers married brothers. Don and Dakota, both 18, are eight months apart, and are also the youngest in their families.
Which feature do you think suits A1 better? Vote on front page poll, or let me know here.
Other A1 contenders:
-- An advance on Tuesday's city council meeting, where the council is expected to talk about funding another new fire station.
--We're working on localizing the latest Iran wire story. If you know of any Iran connections in the Crossroads region, please let us know.
And here's a quick look ahead to Wednesday: We finish our most powerful series with No. 1. Who will that be?
