  • Jared, you make a fine distinction. I believe it was Benfari who added the sixth realm of power, after Raven and French's five.

  • French and Raven, I remember it well: CLERR. When we learned French and Raven, we were taught that the list typically only had 5 bases/forms of power. With all the different styles and studies, CLERR was the way I trained myself to remember it F&R. If you liked French and Raven, you may also like Burns and Bass' ideas on Transformational Leadership. Different aspects of F&R are congruent with B&B.

  • French and Raven describe external sources or fuels for power and therefore measure success along such lines but I would argue there is power to be found within oneself that does not require any external ignition. To be aware of self, of one's abilities, to be able to generate and sustain personal growth from the spark within is a power indeed.
