One morning on my way to work a month ago, the obnoxious DJ on our rock station was laughing about the Houston Cougars being invited into the Eastern Conference. I called and left a voice message with a short quiz:

Which team from Texas is the only one in the Top 25?

a) Texas Longhorns b) Texas Aggies c) Houston Cougars

If you answered a or b, [sound of buzzer] go to the back of the class!

Since that time, the Longhorns stumbled into the end zone enough times to beat the Aggies and are ranked once again.

For the last couple of weeks I've been hearing from disgruntled Longhorn and Aggie fans on various sites as well as my place of employment that the Houston Cougars don't deserve the ranking they've been getting. At this writing, the Cougars are #6. Yeah, the naysayers grumble, we're unbeaten, but we've been playing "scrub" teams. Incidentally, the Cougars are playing against another ranked team for the conference championship. And I don’t think anyone thought UCLA was a “scrub” team when we beat them early this season. The ESPN Game Day team came to our campus for the SMU game for live coverage. Maybe, just maybe folks at the national level think we deserve some respect.

Now that the Aggies have fired their coach, suddenly OUR coach is high on their list of must-haves. Also Arizona State. And who knows who else. It must really gravel folks to admit that maybe the University of Houston has a decent program. Well, we’ve certainly had our share of coaches that others lured away. Art Briles, for example, left UH four years ago for Baylor, another ranked team.

I don’t blame the Aggies for wanting Kevin Sumlin. Nothing succeeds like success. Meanwhile, hands off our coach!

  • No, but definitely a season to build on. On the bright side, your chances of keeping your coach are much better now. :)

  • My mistake. I thought we played them earlier this season. Didn't work out so well today.

  • BTW, just looked at your schedule/record. You haven't played Southern Miss this season nor any other ranked opponent. I honestly hope your team does well today. It will be great for the school and for the state of Texas.

  • Don't forget TCU... and not really, just a taste.

  • When I called the station a month ago, the Coogs were alone in the Top 25. AT THIS WRITING (it's in the middle paragraph) the Coogs are #6, with other Texas teams in the Top 25, including Baylor and Texas.

As for the small test of playing with the big boys, the UH already defeated Southern Mississippi earlier in the season. Does that mean we passed already?

  • So which is it, are they the only Texas team in the top 25 or aren't they? I count 4 teams. You have become a great football team and I'm glad to see it. I don't think you can argue that you have played only scrub teams and haven't had to earn that ranking. Notice I didn't say you didn't deserve it. You just haven't had to earn it yet. Many average teams could go undefeated with a schedule like that. Today will be a small test of what it's like to play with the big boys.
