I'm in day two of trying to get an accident report from the Department of Public Safety.
That means my day goes something like this: make a phone call. Wait. Repeat. Wait. Make a phone call. Repeat. And again. And so on. (To ward off comments or editorial repremand, let me point out I do other stuff while I wait.)
Here's the thing: Going by other reporters' accounts, the trooper I'm calling wants to be helpful. But he's out of the office, doing his job. There hasn't been time for him to actually write an accident report --so ONLY he has all the information I need. That leaves me waiting for that star-crossed moment when he's at his desk, I'm at my desk, there's a phone call, and magic happens.
Maybe you wonder why, sometimes details from accidents, crimes or emergencies aren't in news stories. There can be many reasons, but most often -- and most frustratingly -- it's just a matter of missed connections.
Now, you'll have to excuse me. I have a phone call to make.

And this is why I love the copy desk. Keep slugging it out like you always do!
