I haven't been truly puzzled by any local public information policies for awhile. I guess I was due for this.

Witnesses reported two vicious pit bulls in the 1600 block of Navarro on Monday. Police shot one of the dogs, but didn't kill the dog. The other ran away and hid under a house.

The dog that was shot was taken to the animal shelter, police said. But from there, we have no idea what happened to it. Nor do we know what happened to the other dog. Ken Lemke, assistant director at the health department, said it's department policy to answer written requests for information. He faxed me a request form and told me to fill it out if I wanted answered.

I asked if I could e-mail a letter instead, and he told me the form was the way to go. Forms like this really irk me for two reasons: 1. My handwriting is so sloppy that fourth-graders make fun of it; 2. I sure can send some e-mails, but the fax machine never fails to stump me. Actually, I think I sent the health department the same request, five times. Oops.
