If you're interested in learning more about the proposed shield law, the Austin American Statesman offers this site (see clarification below). The idea behind the Free Flow of Information Act is to give journalists a concrete tool to protect confidential sources and material (Without going to jail. I guess whether that's good or bad depends on how you feel about journalists.)
In this 1972 case SCOTUS ruled this isn't a constitutional privilege.
A shield law would be more effective, and sanitary, I imagine, than the method I now use to protect my materials: licking everything on my desk. Seriously. Don't touch my notebooks.
