The high school football season is over and it ends without a state championship.
But that shouldn't take away from some great coaching in the area this season.
Look around. In Class 4A, Chris Soza led Beeville to the fourth round for the first time in school history. Richard Whitaker at Calhoun brought a young team back to the area playoffs. Bob Gillis did his usual good job and Danny Edelman took the mess at Bay City and got the Blackcats into the playoffs.
Mark Reeve took an inexperienced Cuero team to the Class 3A semifinals and how about Mike Treybig at Palacios. The first playoff appearance in 43 years and the Sharks go four rounds deep. Ricky Lock turned Gonzales around and led the Apaches to the quarterfinals.
Brad Dumont guided Rice Consolidated to the Class 2A semifinals and Rob Schoenfeld led Edna to a share of the District 28-2A championship. Jerry Long overcame the loss of some exceptional skill people and led the Brahmas to the third round.
Steven Cerny and Billy Turek do a great job every year at Shiner. Rodney Dowell helped Louise break a long playoff drought and David Sine got Flatonia back in the playoffs.
Of course, the dean of the area coaches Pat Henke led Sacred Heart to another TAPPS state title.
It was an interesting year. It will be capped by the Advocate's all-area team on Sunday, Dec. 30.
Hope you enjoyed it and had a Merry Christmas.
