  • victorianbybirth, yes I know it's my one sister that is always saying my mom is spending our inheritance on bingo and going to gamble in Louisiana. I realize it's her money to spend and I am happy she is still so active in her 80's.

"I think it would be a great idea because I would rather my mother and her friends go to Galveston instead of driving way over into Louisiana to spend their children's inheritance.".....................................................................Ummm............she's alive, so it's her money to do as she pleases.  If that is your attitude, you'll be lucky if the will doesn't read "in sound mind, I spent it all".   I don't view my parents as "insurance", they worked hard to have what they do, I want them to enjoy their retirement.  It is up to me to work hard & earn my way, not sit back & wait for mom & dad to kick so I can have something in life.

Sorry, off topic.  As my parents go to Louisiana often gambling, it would be nice if they had something closer to home as they aren't getting any younger.

  • Look at Colorado, they ahve legalized gambling in THREE or FOUR small cities.  It seems to be working for them.  A friend recently went there to visit her daughter and was telling me about it.  There are two or three towns that have casinos in them, they are like a mini Las Vegas.  Colorado makes a lot of money from the revenue of the casinos.

  • "Personally I oppose this proposal for legalized gambling as much as other proposals I have seen."
Being personally opposed to something is no reason for it to be illegal.  Casino gambling should be legal for the simple reason that it caters to people who want it.  The money spent there is their money!  Deciding how to spend thier money is their business -- not the business of the state.  The fact that it would help keep Texans money here in Texas is simply a side benefit.  It is a question of personal liberty that the state should not be putting their prohibitive noses into.  There are no statistics I know of that show the percentage of people who personally oppose casino gambling have regular Friday night poker nights or bet on ball games.  It would be interesting to know how many go to Vegas, Reno, or Louisiana to the casinos there.  The fact that guvner goodhair opposes casinos is just another reason they're a good idea.
