President Obama says, “…American kids spend too little time in school, putting them at a disadvantage with other students around the globe…the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom.”

I wonder if our local school districts will be ready for a new reform proposed by President Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan. President Obama desires an increase in the hours students attend public schools; 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and to decrease the summer break to only four weeks. The President also advocates that schools be open on weekends so students will have a safe place to go.

During all these discussions, nothing has been proposed about the funding for these possible mandates from the federal government. Most of the funding in Texas comes from property taxes. Will we see an increase in property taxes or will there be a new consumer tax in the state? Will casinos be necessary to help pay for added education expenses?

I also wonder how it will affect the drop out rate and families that are dependent upon the income of working teenagers.
