........a little bit sour grapes. It's a bitch getting old, ain't it? Carefully stepping over or going around things we used to vault or jump over, while watching the twenty and thirty somethings, testosterone charged, never bat an eye at doing what we finally used better judgment and passed on. I have to admit, that at fifty nine, I am finally starting to come to grips with that, and it ain't fun, but I'm not bitter either. Besides, who cares? Life goes on.

I really enjoyed watching the CMA awards last night. After ten years of being a "surf bum, and a hippie" and on the opposite side of the fence temporarily from the "kickers", I emigrated to Austin, where the hatchet was buried. For good. I found out that I was in a Nirvana colonized by "cosmic cowboys", and that while on Monday, I could go to the old Municipal Auditorium and space out to Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull, or the Moody Blues, a night or two later, I could go to the 'Dillo, and eat nachos and roll my joints on the empty paper plate and just rock to Asleep At The Wheel, Jerry Jeff Walker, or an increasingly hairy and bearded "Red Headed Stranger".

Country music has morphed a few times since then, but the bottom line, is that while there are still some hardcore cryin' in your beer country fans, there are a lot more progressive country fans that will listen to Radio Margaritaville to hear Zac Brown, or Mac McAnally and Jimmy Buffet singing about life, from a slightly different, but still country, point of view.......which brings me to the new generation of country rock/pop, that dominated last nights CMA awards.

It was actually, for being an awards show quite fun, as there were some pretty cool acts featured....... ......which finally, brings me to what this is all about. The CMA folks crowned a new princess last night. And they did it with Billy Gibbons present. They did it with Nicole Kidman present. I'll be the first to admit, that female country stars these days, look more like the girls in the Macy's or Victoria's Secret pullout underwear ads in the Sunday Chronicle than say Loretta Lynn, but the bottom line, is that they are good. They put on a helluva show, and let's face it - country ain't just "Okie From Muskogee" anymore........ Which brings me to Wynonna. (the sour grapes part) She was quoted in USA Today, as having said the Taylor Swift got the award for best country entertainer "too soon". Huh? Is this a club that requires some level of tenure to be president of? I think the criteria is actually, who the CMA folks decide, who actually put the best show on the road and on the air this past year. I actually do not recall if Wynonna was nominated, or actually offered up any performances over the past year that might have put her in contention, but I am more inclined that maybe she feels that to win an award such as Ms. Swift did, that one must have more years and experience under their belt. A bit more "seasoning" Image

...if you will.

  • It's not nice to make fun of old broads. We still look good to the 65-75 set. It takes a little more warpaint, but the effect is the same. LOL Yep, it's a pain getting older, but we can both start subtracting next year when the big 60 hits. I am worn out after chasing an almost toddler and entertaining her while the kids were in Kemah. But, every time she smiles, or giggles, or those baby blues look at me in wonder, I am ready to sign on agaain for as many weekends as it takes. My wonderful sister reminded me of how old I will be when the grands graduate from high school. I assured her I would still be young enough to rent the limo in Manhattan, and let the girls celebrate. Life is what you make of it, and my goals are set for life. Next year, I take boating lessons again, so I can navigate my trade-off for a pecan farm. Hub will begrudingly go along and then thank me whole heartedly in a couple of years. LOL Hang in there, the sun will rise again tomorrow.

  • So let me play devil's advocate here. First of all, I can see things from Wynonna's point of view. Some of it may be chalked up to jealousy, true, and a real lady would realize that no matter how beautiful she is, jealousy is an ugly shade no matter your complexion. However, what has a 19- or 20-year old REALLY achieved? Nothing to merit such an award in my book. With time comes patience, practice, hard knocks and a deeper appreciation of what such an exalted position means. I do believe that was part of the point Ms. Judd was trying to make. She and her mother (and, yes, even younger sister, Ashley) have more than paid their dues throughout the years. Have the newer breed? Not in my book. Deserved? Not in my eyes, either. That's just my belief.

Second, dammmm, furthur, there was really no need other than meanness to print that mugshot. Women get enough grief from society as it is. In fact, someone said on a blog somewhere that women need not be perfect; if they are a little overweight or underweight, or otherwise not conforming to societys' standards, that does not mean they are not worthy. We are destroying our daughters' and sisters' self-esteem by demanding runway-model perfection as a society. I recommend you listen to Janis Ian's "At Seventeen".

Third, Dang, I miss Johnny and Waylon. I have no use for Ms. Swift, Ms. Underwood, and all the other Johnette-come-latelys.

  • This shot doesn't flatter'er much. It's been many moons since Rusty was snockered enough to cuddle up to anything lookin' like that. Would the wake up be called a "COYOTE MORNIN'"?
