The Christmas Day bomber and how he is being tried in court is in play by Republicans. As an election issue for this fall the Republicans are trying to scare Americans by portraying Democrats as soft on terrorism. When I see a tactic such as this being employed, I quite frankly wonder what IQ person they seek to attract with such a ridiculous campaign tactic. Are Republicans saying Americans are stupid enough to fall for a purely crass political ploy like that?

To our detriment, that approach helped George W. Bush get re-elected and it helped stampede Congress into ramming laws through that took away many of our rights. Will America have amnesia about that? Apparently the Republican leadership thinks so.

The failed Christmas Day bombing of an airliner and the decision to have the F.B.I. arrest and interrogate the suspect rather than to send him to a military prison seems to me the right thing to have done. A lot of people don't get it when it comes to our image abroad. Those who advocate the military route fail to understand how our doing so elevates these criminals to rock star status in the terrorist community. It's a silly aruguement founded on politics and the false belief that it is good politics.

Does it matter at all, or have any ring to it, that the Bush administration prosecuted more than 300 people on terrorism-related charges in federal courts and never a complaint was heard from the same Republicans that complain the loudest today?

I'm disappointed that the minority chooses to distract voters instead of working on real problems that face our nation. The abusive system of detention at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and the renditions that took place in other countries has made America less safe and more vulnerable. That black eye has caused us the loss of much international prestige.

Can't we learn from the mistakes of the past?
