I never hear the very loud and boisterous Tea Party mob in here talking up the fact that their candidate for Governor, Debra Medina, believes in nullification. Thats right, Debra Medina advocates the theory of "nullification" which is a pre-Civil War idea that states can nullify federal laws within their territories.

No doubt these are polarizing political times we live in today. Of course being born and raised here in Texas I am accostomed to seeing the wacky and bizarre in politics but this nullification notion seems really off the deep end even for Texas. This revolutionary idea has been pitched before and soundly rejected, but a serious attempt at recycling this notion is being made by Medina.

It seems as though those who believe in nullification think anyone who does not agree with them is ignorant of the 10th Amendment to the Constitution. Not so! This nullification notion is not new and has been debated and rejected in our history. For those unaware, nullification was the precursor to succession and the Civil War.

It has been entertaining watching the Republican gubernatorial contest this year. Incredibly, Perry and Medina seem to be advocating some form of succession from the Union. They aren't flat out saying that but reading between the lines succession is the logical conclusion to their rhetoric. Riling up people to commit sedition and anarchy is crossing any legitimate bounds of political discourse. Medina does suggest that dire consequences will follow if the national government were not to pay heed to nullification of laws she believed were not constitutional.

This comedy hour the Republican Party is putting on with the discredited, pre-Civil Wal legal theory of nullification was originally asserted as a method of defending slavery. How can anyone take the Texas Republican Party serious when it has descended to these depths of sublime silliness.

I provide a link to a well informed commentary on the subject of Texas and nullification:
