Set the Way-Back Machine to: 2002

A few years ago NPR had a show that featured roundtable discussion of established rock, country and pop songwriters talking about their craft, their likes and dislikes in the business. When each one was asked to pick a favorite contemporary song I was surprised that most of guests picked a song I'd never heard, "Making Pies" by Patty Griffin. Griffin, a singer-songwriter from Maine has written songs for the Dixie Chicks, Emmylou Harris, Martina McBride and many others. The song is melancholy and poetic, like something Carson McCullers would've written if she played guitar. Here's a YouTube clip of the song:
